IS executing 'educated women' in new wave of horror says UN

Geneva (AFP) - The UN on Tuesday decried numerous executions of civilians in Iraq by the Islamic State group, warning that educated women appeared to be especially at risk.

The jihadist group is showing a "monstrous disregard for human life" in the areas it controls in Iraq, the UN human rights office said.

The group, which controls large swathes of territory in Iraq and in neighbouring war-ravaged Syria, last week published pictures of the "crucifixions" of two men accused of being bandits, and of a woman being stoned to death, allegedly for adultery.

Numerous other women have also reportedly been executed recently in IS-controlled areas, including Mosul, spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters.

She said "educated, professional women, particularly women who have run as candidates in elections for public office, seem to be particularly at risk."

"In just the first two weeks of this year, reports indicate that three female lawyers were executed," Shamdasani said.

A number of other groups are also targeted by the jihadists, Shamdasani said, pointing to "the ruthless murder of two men, who were thrown off the top of a building after having been accused of homosexual acts by a so-called court in Mosul."

Minorities are not the only ones suffering, with IS meting out "cruel and inhuman punishments" to anyone accused of violating its "extremist interpretations of Islamic Sharia law, or for suspected disloyalty," she said.

Four doctors were recently killed in central Mosul, allegedly after refusing to treat IS fighters.

The group also reportedly executed 15 civilians in front of a large crowd in Fallujah on January 1, on suspicion they had cooperated with Iraqi security forces, and 14 more in a public square in Dour, north of Tikrit, for refusing to pledge allegiance to IS, Shamdasani said.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

Much worse. Of course the media would be controlled and we would never hear about these atrocities.

I'd speculate that IS would not be in Iraq today were it not for our destabilizing that country without cause, justification or legal basis. Whatever atrocities happened under Saddam, it pales in comparison to what IS is doing in that country today. One would have to remove oneself from reality quite a bit to say with a straight face that things would be much worse had we not invaded Iraq in 2003.

but the media is controlled.

Sadam was killing and torturing who knows how many. I am confident millions would have met the same fate if we had not stopped him. If we had stopped Hitler earlier just think how many millions of lives would have been spared a horrible ending. By going into Iraq we changed the world for the better and saved millions.

Well….my speculation is the opposite.

The fact is that in the last quarter century prior to our 2003 invasion, roughly 800,000 Iraqis have died violent deaths. Most of those - approximately 500,000 died as a result of the Iran-Iraq war and another 100,000 during the first Gulf war. Those are a lot of casualties to be sure. But since our invasion less than a dozen years ago - that means in less than half the time - more than 500,000 Iraqis have died as a result of the invasion ans the resulting violence in the country. It's not just hard but impossible to argue that the invasion saved anyone, let alone millions. But that hasn't stopped right wingers from peddling this nonsense, has it?

That's as close to a party line on that issue as it's possible to get.

The argument didn't hold water back in 2003 and frankly it's insulting to even suggest the idea that the Iraq war was about helping the Iraqi people. After all, the US and it's allies didn't give a dusty #### about what Saddam was doing, just as we continue to ignore the atrocities that go on in Saudi Arabia.

The hypocrisy in that selective self righteousness is sickening.
