No Marriage Certificate (K-1 AOS)?

I've seen conflicting info on whether we can use a copy of the marriage license (which we were given on the day of the ceremony, has "COPY" stamped across it basically) instead of a certified marriage certificate for AOS.

Apparently it could take more than 2 months to receive the certified copy! (Los Angeles County). Tried an expedited online order but its not even available via that path yet. Marriage was over a month ago and no information, no way to get one faster... ugh.

Has anyone successfully gotten AOS without a certified copy?

it happens a lot. we did send in copy's of everything. We only added the sentence that Copies of documents submitted are exact photocopies of unaltered documents and I understand that I may be required to submit original documents to an immigration or consular officer at a later date.

You can go into the Norwalk office in person and request an expedite. Ours was expedited on the day of the wedding from the Beverly Hills office and it came in about 2-3 weeks compared to the 6-8 weeks they normally process it in. For your case, you could have it potentially the day you visit Norwalk.

Go ahead with sending in your case with the marriage license copy. I reside in LA and I have done the same. otherwise you'll waste 2 months waiting for the marriage license to arrive.

But she's worrying right now because she will be Out Of Status before her MArriage Certificate will be finish. ;(

It's not a problem, it'll only be for a few weeks, she'll be fine. Any overstay will be forgiven as soon as she files for AOS.

In my case i did not send any letter of explaination. I just had marriage license attached and kept at the back of my mind that i might get an RFE for marriage certificate but i didn't get any RFE and case was processed based on marriage license.

We had to wait a few weeks to go to the county recorder of deeds. I think it was worth the wait because we were able to submit a certified copy which my wife and I felt much better about. It's one less thing USCIS can use as a reason to issue an RFE. Food for thought.
