Most banks should accept Canadian cheques though the waiting period for it to clear if over $500 is usually something like 30 days.

I've sent cheques to U.S. friends before and they've always been able to deposit, with no extra fee, but with a waiting period of 30 days.

30 days? That's a loooong wait. I asked my bank how long it usually takes and the rep answered "...however long it takes to clear". It might be quicker to just send it to my sister to deposit, then transfer it here through Custom House...

Al depends on the bank. Wachovia cashed the bank right away. Might have to do how long you have been a customer and how much $$ you have in your account.

Actually our local bank (a single branch) has to send my canadian checks to some state bank they are tied with ... It usually takes about 7 to 10 days for the money to make it to our account ... I can't remember how much we actually got after the exchange rate and bank fees but this was the easiest situation for us ... I do not have a canadian bank account anymore and I didn't want to burden my family members ...

We took the view that whatever we got was great because we were not depending on the money to live it was just extra cash for us ...

I filed on February 7th, but haven't heard a thing from them... Should I expect a phone call, a letter, something anything?

Just wondered, cause I'm through the "waiting period", and I should be getting close to hearing something I figure.

Do I just call them?

It took maybe 2-3 weeks to hear something from them after I applied.

Yeah, I agree with flames9... it would not hurt to call them. They indeed are friendly and helpful on the phone.

So just talked to the EI people and they told me my file was not yet opened - they were still processing it and I could expect to hear something in another week (that will be a full month from the day I was ellibible - 4.5 weeks from when I applied). Anyway, she did ask if I'd sent my Work Authorization and I said I sent my K-1 Visa and she didn't bat an eye! So.. I should get cards in another week! (crossing fingers) And you guys are right, she called, confirmed my identity and said "What can we help you with today?" - WoWzers, haven't had Customer Service like that in a LONG while!!!

I always found the EI peopel excellent to deal with, even when I was denied and had to appeal. I guess the judge denied my appeal, but the EI lady over ruled him!! lol
