My Mom green card is about to expire on March 21, 2015 and her N-400 is still pending to wait in queue for interview . She want to go back to Vietnam on February 15 and return on March 15. Do you think there will be any problems when she admitted back to US? I heard someone said that green card must be valid 6 months for travel . She do not planned to renew the green cards since its will cost her another 600 bucks. Thanks for your kindly reponses

She travels with no problem, she uses Viet passport to get into Vietnam not the US. GC is used for getting back to US, no need to be 6 months. Remember to bring her N400 receipt just in case she is asked at US border. Good luck.

Ditto to what Nancy said, I would just add to contact the airline and make sure they allow her to board the plane. It's up to them to make that decision, she could even get back to US with an expired card, it's the boarding that you should think about.

Yes, she is still Permanent Resident even her 10 years card is expired, it is not like 2 years card.

As mentioned above, the only issue is with the airline... if an airline agent isn't aware of the rules, he/she may see the expiration date and think that it's like a visa expiration date and refuse to issue a boarding pass.

I don't understand how she will be fine.

Once the green card is expired, they would surely not allow her to come back to USA?

A green card is not an indefinite permanent resident allowance. It's good only for the 10 years it is issued....

Those dates are fine.

it's 6 months validity on a passport, when getting a visa foil attached inside it,

not what you 'heard'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
