I am getting mixed messages on how I should be obtaining my social security number....apparently, as part of the ds260, if you checked the option for ssn, this should be received via mail...when I checked with the officer at poe, he said I need to go to my nearest ssn office.....what have others found?

If you checked the box, it is recommended you wait about 3 weeks to see if the SSA is going to process your card. If you have not received your SSC by then, go to your nearest SSA office and apply for one.

if you've been in USA more than 3 weeks, as a CR-1 or IR-1 visa holder,

it's possible the data entry work done at CBP has gotten into the SAVE database,

and now any SSA clerk can find you in the SAVE database , if you choose to go in to apply for a SSN.

Unless and until a clerk can find you in SAVE database, is useless to apply at a SSA office.

regardling the DS-260 tickbox - it's a gamble, no one knows why these things are missed by the data entry clerks at the POE.

When they NOT miss it - a new order is verified for a SSN.

It is very hit or miss. Like other posters said. Check the box and hope that the person doing the data entry actually enters it and it gets processed. If you've been here for a few weeks and nothing arrives then it likely didn't get entered and you should go to an office to apply in person! Good luck!
