Hi,

My perm resident card is due to expire in 5 years. I have changed my name and want to know if my card will be renewed for another 10 years when I update my name on the card OR will it be updated with the 5 years remaining?

I am curious as its expensive to change your name.

What's the difference between getting citezenship to renewing the 10 year?

Apart from the fact you don't have to renew every 10 years. With the citizenship, don't you give up your British passport? and can you leave the USA for more than a year?

Thank you!

Benefits of USC over a LPR: 1) able to leave the US and return with no time limit, 2) able to vote in federal elections and run for offices--not POTUS as you have to be a natural born USC, 3) able to get your social security benefits anywhere in the world, 4) able to get security clearances or any job where being a USC is required, 5) for some (not in your case) the ability to travel to more countries using a US passport than the home country passport--the UK has the US beat by 2 countries (173 verses 171).

You will always be a British citizen and even though the US does not recognize dual citizenship, the US does not forbid you from holding citizenship to several countries as long as doing so does not violate the oath you will take.

The only attactive thing for my wife is the visa free travel as she needs a visa to go to most countries.

Some people have an issue with saying words they don't mean. ;)

I don't ever plan on becoming a citizen.

Does anyone know if you have to change your passport name at the same time as your green card?

My green card expires in 4 years and my UK passport this year. if I change my passport name this year, will it be a problem if I don't change my green card until it expires?

I can't afford to update both and I am still unsure if I should renew or apply for citizenship.

Thank you for any advise.

If you change one and not the other than carry a copy of your marriage certificate when you travel internationally, to explain the disparity in names between your passport and green card.

Any airline tickets should be booked in the name listed on your passport, not green card.
