How is a gun going to benefit a kid who's parent don't even have the child in sight? It isn't. You don't know what is happening to the child while they walking down the street, with no grown up.

Huh? The safety of children isn't just limited to killings only. There are other things involved in crime, like rape, molestation, kid napping, etc.

By the way, age of sexual assault victims

15% are under age 12

29% are age 12-17

Girls ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of sexual assault.

31% of rapes are committed by a stranger.

And those stats have likely been the way for a very, very, very, very long time. In fact, the stats may have been even worse, in the past, but now parents actually think to ask questions of their children.

And remember, the inverse of 31% of rapes being committed by a stranger is that 69% are committed by someone the victim knows. Using the numbers you have provided:

4.64% of sexual assault victims are both under 12 and assaulted by a stranger. 10.35% are both under 12 and assaulted by someone they know.

8.9% of sexual assault victims are both ages 12-17 and assaulted by a stranger. 20.1% are both 12-17 and assaulted by someone they know.

So 13.54% of sexual assault victims are children (under 18) who are assaulted by a stranger.

30.45% of sexual assault victims are children who are assaulted by someone they know.

Playing the odds, this means children are much, much safer from sexual assaults out on the street, wandering, than they are in their homes.

Come on people!

I am kind of disappointed in the comments here. The sad thing of the matter is, we should be able to allow our kids to walk to the playground, ALONE, and not worry about them, but the truth of the matter is, we can't. I would have a nervous breakdown to allow this to happen. I would rather for CPS to be called instead of 911 to be called about 2 kids, found in the river, raped and dead. We can thank lenient child rape, child pornography and molestation charges for this growing problem.

Kids almost need their own darn body guard. As society, we have allowed this.

not where i live, kids can walk to the playground. the only trouble i ran into as a kid so far as predators go was in church, safest place for a kid to be.

If those odds look good to you, be my guest. I couldn't be a parent that thinks this is okay.

People from church go to playgrounds to, so they can offer candy in the name of the Lord.

If those odds look good to you, be my guest. I couldn't be a parent that thinks this is okay.

It would entirely depend on the neighbourhood. A quiet neighbourhood without busy streets where a child could get hit and I would be entirely okay with my hypothetical child wandering a little and exploring, within limits and time guidelines and a friend. Maybe it's naive, but I live in a city where I see young children, perhaps eight years old, heading off to their ritzy private schools on the subway during rush hour. I know intimately that you're more likely to be victimized by someone you know. I know that, while homicide kills about 1500 kids per year in the US, car accidents kill somewhere around 3500 children under 14 per year. The reason that homicide is such a 'huge' killer of children, comparatively, is because so few children die in the US each year. A child is much more likely to be killed in a car accident while being driven to school than they are to be victimized by a stranger wandering by themself.

All things must be proportionate. Coddling children and wrapping them in cotton wool only impairs their internal danger sensors so that, if they ever are in a situation where something is going horribly wrong, they may not realize until it is too late.

You need to allow only cars that can go 20 mph Ban everything else . Think of the kids .
