In late December, Montgomery County Police picked up the kids, Rafi and Dvora, walking just half a block from home after being alerted by an observer. Six cop cars soon showed up at the family’s house, and the incident spurred Montgomery County Child Protective Services to investigate Danielle and her husband Alexander for child neglect. This week, CPS officials visited the parents at home and also interviewed the children at school — without their parents’ knowledge or consent.

CPS, anywhere, is not known for Constitutional adherence...

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Yeah I read about that. It is so sad; how can we expect kids to grow up into functional adults when they are not allowed to learn independence in small steps, age appropriately? Of course it all depends on the child- I have a almost 7 year old who is non-verbal autistic, and we have alarms on the inside of the doors so he does NOT get outside.

i can't imagine looking out my window, seeing kids walking down the street, and picking up the phone to complain with CPS. insane.

Crazy how things have changed in such a short period of time. Used to be kids couldn't wait to get out of the house to go out and play. Parks were full with kids playing all sorts of games and interacting with each other without adult supervision. Now the parks are empty and you hardly see any kids playing in the park unless it's an organized activity with adult supervision. There are many factors that play into this, but I blame video games and computers more than anything else.

And kids walked around with BB guns without anyone calling the police

Same here - there are kids playing outside in the neighborhood all the time. That's how it is supposed to be. My daughter is one of the kids out there playing. Nobody here in my neighborhood sees that as an issue. We're all happy that the kids get together and have fun.

And scissors...actually they ran with those...walking with scissors was always reported to CPS.

We used to play with BB guns and sling shots quite a bit. It was a different time.

Good times. And, BB guns without orange tips.

around here kids still roam free, mostly (i mean this is a really small town) but there are still plenty of adults who parent their kids like they live in dc suburbs, instead of the country. there will probably always be helicopter parents. but yeah - my kid hangs out with his friends on xbox live. i suggest inviting kids over after school or on the weekend to actually for real hang out - zero interest.

kids could walk with toy guns without getting shot by police.

kids still walk to and from the elementary school here in town, unsupervised. but there's only a couple because most don't live close enough to walk. i wish my kid would go out, but he's too old for playgrounds now. when i was young, my mom would never have let me go to a playground without her. not until i was 12 or so.
