Last Minute marriage--or---'What Happens now' ??

Hi Friends,

Forgive my ignorance please--I've been so focused on getting her here (and now she is) that I haven't given much thought to 'what now?' (regarding the next level of paperwork purgatory)

I'm trying to read up in the guides etc but now there is a whole new batch of terms, fresh confusion, and such----can you please give me a very simple overview (in layman's terms) of what happens next?

I know: 1) You get married

2) ??????

3)_____

and I have a specific question(s):

My fiancee's I-94 expires on March 19------ we'd dearly love to have our marrriage outside in some reasonably warm weather (which usually is underway in the second half of March here in South Carolina)

QUESTION: how close to the expiration of I-94 is TOO close? (the last saturday available for a wedding would March 17th for us)----can you get married at the last minute and be legal?

QUESTION: as above----what actually has to be done/filed before the fiancees K-1 expires?

(might it be expediant to get married by a justice of the peace (etc) earlier and do the filing and then have the religious wedding later? {in her country this is common and only the civil marriage hold any legal weight})

Thanks!

John in SC

What matters is that you get legally married before the I-94 expires, filing the papers can be after that happens, as long as the marriage took place BEFORE the expiration date, sooner is better, and there's no time frame to file the papers but then again, sooner is better.

Civil marriage for now and religious marriage later is what many do.

AOS is next. If the wedding must be a certain time of year, maybe a justice of the peace wedding to get the paperwork flowing in a timely fashion, then a formal wedding later

AHA! Well, that is interesting----so thats how it works? As long as the marriage documents are dated before the expiration of the K-1/I-94 then we'll be OK?

So if the I-94 expires on march 19 and the government has not heard from us yet--the immigration cops won't screech up to the door and deport her?

mmmHmmmmnnnn,

Thanks---I'm learning!

Yes you need to be legally married before the expiration of the I-94, we plan on going to the court house have doing the legal marriange, then do a nice wedding reception/ceremony later gives us more time to plan a nice wedding.

You can take your time filing AOS, but it is recommended to do it ASAP.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.
