I m sure I do but how do I prove it to them? I have no forms ... only my daughters and my permanent resident card. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. Im guessing I just nned to bring our birth cersts pasports and permanent resident cards with us?

Thanks for all your help

Yes, green card=permission to work.

Check the SSA website on what you need to apply for a social security number. You need form SS-5 plus some supporting documents.

As Lainie pointed out, your green card authorizes you to work.

However, your employer needs your SSN to pay you.

If you arrived on immigrant visas and automatically got your green cards, then you may unfortunately have a common problem.

My brother and his family arrived on immigrant visas. After 1 month without getting their SSN cards, we went to the local SSA office. We were told that their names are similar to many people who already have SSN, so that was why they didn't get SSN cards even though they requested them on the DS-230s. They had to file new applications to get their cards.
