A prominent Jewish leader has written to the governments of all the EU countries, calling on them to pass legislation giving special licence for Jewish people to carry guns.

In a letter sent to interior ministries around Europe and obtained by Newsweek, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, director general of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe (RCE) and the European Jewish Association (EJA) - the largest federation of Jewish organizations and communities in Europe - writes: “We hereby ask that gun licensing laws are reviewed with immediate effect to allow designated people in the Jewish communities and institutions to own weapons for the essential protection of their communities, as well as receiving the necessary training to protect their members from potential terror attacks.”

Speaking to Newsweek, Rabbi Margolin added that he believes that “as many people within the Jewish community as possible” should carry weapons.

I don't believe it will happen either, but it does go to show that not one single religion has monopoly over extremists.

Generalizations apart, it is not all Jewish folks [sic] who are proposing that they be allowed to carry guns. It's one very misguided Rabbi, who surely has some followers. For the most of it, everyone in Europe, regardless of religion, is going about more cautiously.

The last thing Europe needs at this point, is a bunch of trigger happy people going about their business with guns. Furthermore, why only Jews and not Roma gypsies, or protestants as well? Where does one draw the line?

Allowing the same insane spread of firearms in Europe that's inexplicably allowed here would do one thing and one thing only - bring homicide and gun violence rates into the range that is prevalent here. That would mean increasing gun violence about tenfold for most Western European countries. They. Will. Not. Do. That.

The bad guys are going to get guns no matter what. I'm pretty sure those Muslim's involved in the Paris massacre were armed. Allowing firearms to all Europeans puts everyone on a level playing field and allows potential victims to defend themselves.

Gun violence in Europe is negligible. Here, it costs tens of thousands of lives each and every year. Europeans have no desire to go down that same destructive path that the US chooses to go down.
