I have to say that the above post has us a little nervous. Things for Joan and I have gone as smoothly as it could go and I thought we were ready to file for ROC at the end of August this year. This is what we have:

My life insurance policy (Joan as beneficiary)

My annuity (Joan as beneficiary)

My will (Joan as beneficiary)

Joan’s life insurance policy (I am beneficiary)

Joan and I co-authored a new photography book with both names on the cover--attached (major photography book publisher)

We just started a new joint investment (stocks) account

Joint credit cards (AMEX and Visa)

Joint bank account (set up a “residual/leftover/savings” account that might be used to feed our investment account)—see concerns below.

2013 and 2014 joint married tax returns

She is listed on household bills

Concerns based on this post:

I also have a bank account—I work a “Day Job” and own a photography school/business. I also teach psychology as an adjunct faculty member at a local university. used to have two accounts, but it became easier to consolidate my income into one account. Hence my one account. I was not able to add Joan to that account because the business is set-up as a sole proprietorship. I would have to form a partnership in order to add Joan to that account (this is not a problem, but naively it just seemed easier to open our own joint account. Here is where I am most concerned: the major bills have been set up to come out of my account (including our joint credit cards and her phone service)—just because they always came out of that account. Joan’s paycheck and other miscellaneous income (i.e., tax refunds) goes into our account. We transfer money from our “savings” to my account when we need extra funds to cover the bills when needed.

Our car is paid off so there is no joint auto loan/title.

The mortgage is in my name because the bank said that I would need to pay a couple thousand dollars to redo the title/mortgage (we live a “comfortable” life, but don’t have $2,000.00+ for MORE paperwork (like all of you, we need $$$ for the next phase of the journey).

Joan was on my health insurance at work but was dropped when she got a full time job with benefits (a savings of $300.00 a month for us).

Questions:

Would it be better if I:

Change my direct deposits/withdrawals/bill pays to our account now or leave it as is and include the above explanations. My concern is if this change would look “funny” now with the ROC filing only 7 months away. Would I include an explanation about my I changed it all now (basic naivete because I thought we were doing it right).

Salamat Po as always,

Hello Steve,

Relax - you have more than enough. We had joint title to a vehicle, a joint lease, same health insurance and address, but no joint bank account (for boring technical reasons). Really, you're fine.

Jon
