Nexus, ROC extension letter and new passport application

Everything is coming up all at once here. We just got Nexus, I am going to apply for removal of conditions in under 2 weeks and my passport expires in 2 months. I am trying my best to figure out how to organize the applications and continue to be able to visit Canada.

Extension letter - from what I can gather reading, extension letters will easily get you across the border. However, with Nexus I read a story of someone who received a Nexus violation for crossing the border with an expired document. His greencard had expired and he had the extension letter but it wasn't in their system and apparently showing them wasn't enough. So from what I can figure, I need to manually go into a Nexus office to update my file with the extension letter to prevent getting a Nexus violation if I cross with it. As well as show the Nexus officer my Nexus card, green card and extension letter at the booth.

Passport - From what I have figured out, it seems like you don't need a Canadian passport to enter the US or Canada as long as you have your green card. I need to apply for my new passport soon (it says it takes 20 business days to process once it is received - oy) and in the meantime I will likely also have an expired green card with an extension letter. Is it possible to cross with Nexus and green card and NOT have a passport? Or take it off of Nexus if it is expired?

Thanks for any relevant information!

You need to call Nexus to find out what they want. I have to make that call as well. I don't know if you can travel to Canada with a green card and the extension letter. I also have to contact Nexus but only because of the extension letter as my passport is good for a couple more years. I renewed it before filing the I-130.

If you find anything out from Nexus in the meantime will you share it? I'm going to make the effort to call in the next couple of days as well regarding the I-751 update. My green card doesn't expire until March but approval is not likely to come before then.

You are able to update your records by logging into the GOES system. It allows you to update the documents you hold but I don't know if the green card expiration date is considered to be the new one on the letter or not. The card itself is considered to be expired is it not? It is confusing and I certainly don't want to mess it up!

I'll absolutely update you. I spent today filling out my daughter's proof of Canadian citizenship application (again after it was sent back for more info), and looking up applying for a Canadian passport with a name change. And then looking up ROC forms and proof required. Ugh. I need to find the phone number for Nexus and hopefully some time during my daughter's nap tomorrow or the day after to call them.

Random question - did you include any affidavits in your ROC application?

Posting partially to remind myself. Here is the contact information for Nexus:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/menu-eng.html

As a US resident we would call the middle number M-F from 8:30-4:30 EST. Ugh that means they close 1:30 my time... hooray. Gotta make sure to do it early in the day.

I just got off the phone with the Ontario line. They told me to bring the extension letter to one of their offices. For me it is Fort Erie where I cross regularly. She said "within 30 days" of expiry but I don't want to chance it. I worry about inconsistent answers.

As a US resident it doesn't matter which one you call or go to. You would pick one nearest you I think. The link you had has the same numbers I got. I cross in Ontario so that's where I called. Try the BC, AB, SK, MN line instead! Let me know how you make out. I will put the numbers for reference here if anyone else needs them.

ONTARIO 1-800-842-7647

B.C., AB, SK, MN 1-866-496-3987

QC and all Atlantic 1-866-399-5887

And for random question about affadavits, no, I did not send any. We shall see soon enough if that flies or not!

Just got off the phone as well. I called the same number you did and was told by the man who answered that he wasn't sure but thought I could probably cross without a passport as long as it was still technically valid (so as long as I get my new one by March I should be okay to cross before then with only a Nexus card and greencard) and he also said I'd need to bring my extension letter in to the nearest Nexus office. He said he wasn't sure so he gave me a number to call the border crossing I usually use and I spoke with them. The lady verified what he had said and added that I didn't need an appointment to bring them the extension letter but that I could just drop in.

Alright, that's good news!

Now for my next problem, finding a Canadian guarantor soon :P

You only need a Canadian guarantor if you are changing your name. You should not need it if you're just renewing.

My passport is still in my maiden name so unfortunately I get the joy of applying for a brand new passport. I decided to go with the 10 year one just so I don't have to deal with that for a long time again. After 10 years I can either renew or maybe at that point just use a US passport. We'll see when the time comes.

I did manage to find a Canadian guarantor that I know and will be meeting next week, so it'll be a form filled paperwork crazed photocopy making weekend!
