Hi guys.

I recently started looking into naturalization. I got my conditional greencard in 2010 at the age of 24 based on my marriage to my lovely wife :) So, this definitely just came as a bit of shocker. Selective Service? I've never ever heard of that until going through the n-400 worksheet. I know that's no excuse but somehow that completely slipped through my fingers back in the day. We had no lawyer and did all the paperwork ourselves so it was all quite overwhelming at the time. Now to my question, what are my options? I used the search option a bit but couldn't really make out what to do now. I am now 29 years old. I checked the Selective Service website and apparently I am not registered.

Okay nevermind. PHEW!!! EXHALE! I just found a letter of registration proof in the paperwork. Is it possible that this was done automatically when we filed all the paperwork for the greencard because I don't remember registering. Anyway, the lesson learned here is.....do not rely on an online checking tool because it said I wasn't registered. I should have probably called the SSS to double-check right away.

USCIS automatically register you if you file an I-485 and are a male aged under 26. This is stated on the I-485 itself.

My oldest was registered automatically but the second boy wasn't. He filled out the form himself since their online system was down. They have their cards but neither one can be found online. I mentioned in another thread it's best to call them and have them search for you.

Good that you don't have to worry now though. Good luck with the rest of the process.

It appears as if automatic registration is done of you are between 18-26. I had to register my son because at the time that he received his GC, he was only 16. He turned 18 last year and I received a letter when he applied for college stating that he did not register. He is now registered.

Once you hit your 26th birthday it is too late to register. You then are forced to wait until you are 29 to apply for naturalization if using marriage to a USC or 31 if using the 5 year rule. This is based on good morale character for the past 3 or 5 years. Not registering for the selective service is not following the laws of the US and will be used to show you are not of good morale character. Now that you are 29 it does not matter one way or the other. It is good that you found the registeration, but at 29 YO it is not really an issue.
