Hi Pauline,

I agree, I like the scenery the best too, especially snow out here in the countryside. And yes, my favourite season is winter too. Which reminds me, it snowed about another couple of inches today (and we are expecting more snow) here. Yippee!!!

As for driving in the winter, it is quite the challenging, fun, and crazy! If you ever do drive in the snow, keep in mind the following a)Allow for extra prep (snow shoveling) and driving time b)Drive slowly c)Watch out for deer and other animals d)Follow the tire tracks on country roads e)Use the highbeams in dimly (or no lighting at all) areas. Good luck on your driving endeavours (oh, and remember to get plenty of practice driving before you take your test)! Lol...Did I ever tell you that I passed my driving test in Canada in the middle of a snowy winter day (that's another story).......

Ant

I like the scenery the best. The snow is nice to look at, but driving around in it might be a problem. Haven't tried driving around here yet. I haven't found anything to be really bad around here, so as for the worst, I'll keep you posted, lol.

Hi Ant,

There must be at least 2 feet of snow here just now, and it's still snowing. It amazes me how one day there is nothing but green grass, then the following day there is piles of snow. I will have to practice driving in these conditions when I get my NY state driving license. I had an accident once when it was snowing and that makes me nervous to drive in it now. However, I'll have to get used to it.

Hi Pauline,

Yup, the snow keeps on piling up, and there is still more snow to come. I guess that is expected, since it is winter. The weather has been really unusual too, I agree. Personally, I think that it is due to the following reasons: 1) Global Warming or some other strange weather pattern on Earth (as the rest of the USA seems to be getting strange weather too) 2)Lake effect snow (typical for the WNY areas of NYS) 3)Some other unexplained reason (any other suggestions, for example, the groundhog messed up his predictions...just kidding)

Sorry that you got into an accident in the snow. I hope you were ok and weren't hurt. On that note, you should probably drive in the snow when you are ready and comfortable to do so, at your own pace. Take your time, one step at a time. Maybe start driving in warmer weather first to get used to driving, and then move on to driving in the winter? Oh, and if need be, read up on the dmv maunal about driving in the snow, take a safer/defensive driving class, hire a driving instructor, or go driving with someone feel comfortable with while driving. Good luck with your driving endeavours.

Ant

I live in Queens, the underappreciated boro...

:dancing:

It doesn't seem to be as 'hip' as Manhattan or Brooklyn, and when you say you live in Queens the first thing a lot of people(from outside NY obviously) say is " is everybody there like Archie Bunker?" :hehe: At street fairs it's easy to find T-shirts reading 'Manhattan' or 'Brooklyn' or even 'South Bronx', but no Queens!!! Where's the love?

That said, when I first moved to NYC I lived in Queens, moved briefly to the Upper West Side and then moved back to Queens because I missed the diversity(especially the fabulous, CHEAP Indian food made for desi, not wimpy Western taste ;) ) and the general vibe - it's like you're close enough to the City to commute or hang out but it's more 'real' and laid-back...now I wouldn't live anywhere else, except Kathmandu :P

Another NYC couple here! I've lived here most of my life and love it (in spite of the hot summers and cold winters). My husband moved here from the Philippines about a year ago. We finally bought him enough winter clothes this month to last through this cold spell. My husband is from Manila so he's used to living in a very urban environment, I think it made his adjustment much easier.

Oh, and I think Staten Island is the most underappreciated borough :) As I recall, it was not that long ago (in the 80s maybe?) they were actually talking about "seceding" from NYC!

Hi Everyone,

Good luck on your immigration journeys! I added to this message thread “Best/Worst in NYS”, so I should reply to the questions that I asked. So, listed below are my answers (in no particular order):

Best about NYS

+Moist important of all (to me): My husband and my family are here

+The friendlier attitudes that Americans have (from my experience anyways)

+Beautiful American scenery (Ahhh...I can see the natural wonders around me...)

+Local Foods: 1) Perry Ice Cream 2) Cuba Cheese and Friendship Cottage Cheese +Beautiful lake effect countryside snow in the winter (a regional/area thing though)

Worst about NYS

-Those annoying lawyers and car dealerships commercials on television

-People thinking that because I live in New York State, that I live in New York City (which I do not, though I don't mind that other people live there though)

What do you think is the best and the worst about living in New York State? Feel free to add your ideas and suggestions too.

Ant

Hmmmmm....to make this message thread a bit more intresting, let me ask all of you....

a) What do you all like the best about NYS?

b ) What do you all like the least about NYS?

Feel free to post your answers above/below....
