BAGHDAD (AP) — In the eyes of most Iraqis, their country's best ally in the war against the Islamic State group is not the United States and the coalition air campaign against the militants. It's Iran, which is credited with stopping the extremists' march on Baghdad.

Not our problem anymore. Time to bring everybody home. America doesn't need their oil any longer. The US now gets more oil from Canada that we do from all of OPEC combined. europe's problem now.

Isn't it true that Europe gained more oil from the Iraq "regime change" than the US ever did?

If we did it wasn't reflected at the pumps.

Iraq was about privatising Iraq's oil, much the same as the US did in Iran in 1954

If competent leadership is at the helm of any middle eastern country exporting oil, that country will benefit immensely. The US wasn't there to steal the oil. We pay countries for it and the ones that manage it properly become very very rich.

What makes you think it wasn't about oil? Because the US/UK government said so?

Before Saddam was deposed iraqi oil was nationalised with a portion of the production rights being awarded exclusively to Russian and Chinese oil companies.

Now its western interests who control rights to a large, extremely cheap source of oil. I dont know about you but I don't trust our governments for having altruistic motives any more than I'd trust the Russians or the Chinese.

More than that I think it is highly dubious that key figures in the previous administration have made themselves very rich out of the iraq war. Anywhere else you'd call that a conflict of interest, but when you're the fattest, dirtiest rat there is it seems that these terms no longer apply.

Well, the US was not the biggest beneficiary of Iraq exported oil after the war. If I recall correctly, there were more European oil companies winning oil contracts in Iraq than US. But here's the deal, if the Iraq war deposed a dictator and created a functioning Democracy capable of becoming rich off its oil reserves by selling them to us, then I think it was worth it. If Iraq had become Kuwait after the war, it would be a good thing. But it didn't work that way so it wasn't worth it. I have zero problem stabilizing an oil rich country so that the profits of said oil can be had and properly distributed to its people, not just its rulers. Too bad it didn't work.

Iraq was a rich country before the years of sanctions, invasion, destruction of key infrastructure. The US I'm sorry didn't invade Iraq to bring democracy, don't be naive. The Iraq adventure may not have turned out the way neocons though it would, but be fooled into thinking this war was about helping the Iraq people. Besides, the invasion itself generated astronomical profits for the war industry, and don't tell me, this was part of the reason for the invasion.

I wasn't suggesting any of that.
