I-864 and Copy of Joint Sponsors Passport

Because I am not currently residing in the US we are using a family friend in the US to be the joint sponsor. They are a USC but their passport expired a few years ago.

Will a copy of an expired passport be sufficient evidence of their US Citizenship? This is for section 11.a to 11.c on the I-864 form. The instructions for this section state:

Proof of US citizen or national status includes a copy of your birth certificate, certificate of neutralization, certificate of citizenship, consular report of birth abroad to citizen parent, or a copy of the biograhoic data page of your us passport'

The joint sponsor has been a USC since birth but can't locate their birth certificate and all they have as proof of their USC is a passport that expired 10 years ago. We need the I-864 completed and sent to us within the next few weeks so they won't have time to get a new passport. Will a copy of their expired passport be sufficient?

As far as I know the document must not be expired. Although it is a bummer to wait, it's better for your joint sponsor to apply for a new passport or obtain a new birth certificate from the birth states vital statistics. I had to do this a few years ago and it only took about a week, if I remember right and was much cheaper than getting an expediated passport.

It may put you off a few weeks, but it's better than to send it in and then be told it won't work and have to wait for the new one again and peocessesing time again.

Agreed. Getting a certified copy of their birth certificate would be the cheapest/fastest/easiest way to provide proof of citizenship.
