Dianne Feinstein: Terrorist sleeper cells are in the U.S.

By Ben Wolfgang - The Washington Times - Sunday, January 11, 2015

A key senator said Sunday she believes there are terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S. that could carry out attacks similar to the ones in France that left 17 people dead last week.

Sen Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat and vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, did not comment on specific threats against America but said other attacks are possible.

“I think there are sleeper cells not only in France but certainly in other countries and, yes, in our own,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “This calls for vigilance. … Hopefully, we can be even more active in terms of doing those things which enable us to find terrorists, see who they’re communicating with and to track that.”

Ms. Feinstein’s words come the same day a new Rasmussen poll shows that 65 percent of Americans believe terrorist attacks similar to those seen in France last week are likely to happen over the next 12 months.

But administration officials say there is no information on specific plots or sleeper cells.

“I don’t think that we have any information that would indicate, certainly with regard to the homeland, that there is any ongoing threat or any threat that was activated by what we see so tragically here in France,” Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said on ABC’s “This Week” program on Sunday. “With regard to sleeper cells here in France, that is an investigation that’s ongoing and being conducted by our French allies.”

When you're fighting extremism, you're fighting ideologies that rise up in the face of oppression or perceived persecution. You're dealing with people who have become so paranoid and terrified of others, so angry, that they are willing to do whatever they can to express that. No matter the society, there are always going to be small cells of people who are that angry and paranoid, that ready to hurt others. That is inevitable.

And that's what 'sleeper cells' really are. People who would probably become murderers anyway, would probably end up killing another person in rage or fear on their own, but who happened to meet up with an ideology that they could attach to to give them an excuse other than their own paranoia.

Met in 2010 on a forum for a mutual interest. Became friends.
2011: Realized we needed to evaluate our status as friends when we realized we were talking about raising children together.

2011/2012: Decided we were a couple sometime in, but no possibility of being together due to being same sex couple.

June 26, 2013: DOMA overturned. American married couples ALL have the same federal rights at last! We can be a family!

June-September, 2013: Discussion about being together begins.

November 13, 2013: Meet in person to see if this could work. It's perfect. We plan to elope to Boston, MA.

That makes sense, at least in many cases. I don't that much difference between Islamic sleeper cells, and folks hoarding guns waiting for the Zombie Apocalypse.

Or compounds where children are taken and told that they are embroiled in a war for Christ. Or cults. Or so many things.

It's all the same thing, really. It sucks. It sucks that there are people so damaged as to be that kind of person, to live with that kind of anger and pain and fear in their hearts.

But focussing on the ideology that they happen to take up this time is the wrong thing to do. It only brings more attention to that ideology and leads more of these damaged people to mobilize. More important is to teach people common decency, to minimize the number of damaged people out there. More important is to destroy the stigma against mental illness so people and their families aren't afraid to get help. More important is to put an end to the attitudes that lead to bullying and harassment in schools, things that cement damage such as fear and paranoia into developing brains.

We can never eliminate all the people who are terrified and angry and hurting in the ways that would make them do these horrible things, but we can definitely reduce their numbers.

I think you are correct! I think that is why many convicts convert to Islam.

A lot of African-American prisoners do convert to Islam in their search for inner peace. It's important to remember that a very large number of people in American prisons aren't there for a violent crime. There are definitely people who convert and go on to do violence, but you'll note that when you look at lists of notable prison converts to Islam, those who did go on to do violence nearly always did violence in the name of racial oppression and claimed no connection to Islam in their crimes. I do not deny that there have been a handful of Islamic chaplains who have been indicated in extremism, but with up to 80% of prisoners who find religion in prison becoming Islamic converts, if convicts were attaching themselves to radicalized Islam, there would be many more prison converts to Islam on lists of terrorists.

So it doesn't make sense to say or imply that all or even most conversions to Islam have anything to do with radicalization.

One reason many convicts convert to Islam is to get better food. If the discipline helps them deal with life in a meaningful way, so much the better. That is what religion is supposed to do.

No they don't. They convert to get on a special diet and to get out of their cells, work details, etc... It has nothing to do with them searching for inner peace.
