Police race to capture Paris attack suspects, at least one hostage reported taken

DEVELOPING: French security forces rushed to a small town northeast of Paris Friday morning as part of an operation to capture the two Islamist gunmen who murdered 12 people in an attack on the offices of a satirical weekly magazine Wednesday.

French police officials told the Associated Press that the suspects, identified as brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, appeared to have taken a hostage in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele, 25 miles outside the capital, near Charles de Gaulle airport.

Earlier Friday, a French security official told the Associated Press that shots were fired as the suspects, stole a car in the town of in the town of Montagny Sainte Felicite in the early morning hours.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve later confirmed that an operation was underway in Dammartin-en-Goele. He spoke after an emergency meeting with French President Francois Hollande, Prime Minister Manuel Valls, and top police officials.

Thousands of French security forces have mobilized to find the brothers after the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices on Wednesday.

On Thursday, U.S. government sources confirmed that Said Kouachi had traveled to Yemen in 2011 and had direct contact with an Al Qaeda training camp. The other brother, Cherif, had been convicted in France of terrorism charges in 2008 for trying to join up with fighters battling in Iraq. The sources also confirmed that both brothers were on a U.S. no-fly list.
