I remember when I first watched Rollerball I thought the plot sounded preposterous, and yet, 40 years later, here we are...

A large majority of the public. If it makes money, they will keep churning them out. At some point, someone might make a show about live executions. And if you keep the people who were killed in a certain vein(i.e. the undesirables) folks would pay to watch that 24/7.
