what did your fiance/husband do when he first got to america? i'm sure many of your husbands had degrees in great fields...but were they able to get jobs in that field right away? or at all? or did they start off doing other work for a while? someone i spoke to on here said her husband worked at a fast food restaurant. what other jobs do your husbands do (or did) when they first got here?

Good question, I'll be interested to see the replies. :)

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

my husband didnt do anything for 2 years. he is a doctor and they only hire into the residency once a year. he was too late applying the first year so didnt get anything and the second year he just didnt get hired.

he applied for a sleep clinic and they said they wouldnt hire him because the training takes along time and he would just quit when he got a residency.

he also applied at a warehouse and they never called.

he finally got a residency last year. but its only for a year....he needs 3 years...so he hasnt had time to apply this year cuz they work him to death at the hospital so he will be unemployed again this summer.

he applied on monster.com for anything in the medical field and ended up getting called for some sales position for something stupid. i told him dont waste ur time on that.

My husband started out by just working at a local grocery store. It was very good as he got to practice his English and realize that there are people from ALL over the world here. He has been working for the past year as a customer service representative for a warranty company. They originally hired him to use his French skills to speak with their customers and clients from Quebec. Now he is working with dealers and is one of the "supervisors" that angry clients get to speak with. Studying Moroccan law doesn't apply too well to the US. So...he is in a local college now taking classes to eventually become a teacher (what he was doing in Morocco before he came to the States).

I have no idea what Rida will do when he gets here. He is a teacher in Morocco and we will probably have his degree and classes evaluated to see what the equivalent is here. We are not too far from UGA and a couple other colleges, so I am hoping that at the very least, he can be a french tutor. I don't live in a big town, so his possibilities are limited here. He will have to go to a nieghboring, bigger city to find decent work. If not, McDonalds is always hiring.

Well, my answer probably will not matter, since my husband is not in the US. My husband has a masters in financial science and knows 4 languages, so I am hoping with his education and background he will be able to find a position. He is currently trying to see if he could apply for a position in acquistions with the chemical-pharmaceutical firm he works for now after he immigrates. But who knows this could change at any time.

My husband came at the beginning of November and started looking for jobs soon after that. He completed two years of university in Algeria, but he does not yet have a degree. In December he was hired as a valet for a parking company in Boston (so it took him about a month to find a job). Some days are good, some are bad, but he makes pretty good money and his english has improved immensely. He is also starting a Business ESL class at UMass Boston on Monday and will hopefully continue taking some college classes in the fall.

If you live in a big city and your husband is having a difficult time finding a job, I definitely recommend checking out parking companies - they are always hiring and usually pay a pretty good hourly rate. Plus tips, that can turn into a decent monthly income for a 6 hour-a-day job.

Jen, what University does your fiance attend? He's in engineering, right? Has he checked to see if there are any kind of matriculation programs with schools abroad, potentially a US school? Or even internships or any agreements with US businesses or schools?

Everyone's opinion matters. I still would like to hear what all your men do back home even if they aren't here yet. :) My fiance does nothing. lol He's a student and has never had a real job.

I'll have to ask my fiance again what the name was. Unfortunately I know it ISN'T the American University. He's studying a form of Engineering.

I find it so sad all these men study to be doctors, scientists, teachers, accountants, etc and come here having to get a job at McDonalds or something. I worry soooo much about that. More than anything else about him coming here. I can accept him taking a job like that for a while to help his English, but once he's more stable in his language skills I hope he can start doing what he chose to do.

You raise a great question though! I will ask him to talk to his school about programs. I hopppppppe there is something!

Said worked as a police officer (something like special forces), then worked w/ the SWAT team for 5 or 6 yrs, then got moved into Diplomatic Security (bodyguard for visiting VIP's). He has an associates deree in law and since then certificates in many security related things like martial arts, anti-terrorism training, hostage negotiation & rescue etc. He speaks 3 languages and a little bit of a couple more. He is looking for jobs in security for when EAD arrives, but he's willing to do whatever. So many people I know say "He should have no problems getting a great job" - I'm not sure they really know anything, but I hope they're right. There are a number of security options in the area, so I'm hoping something like that works out for him. He searches online almost every day. If all else fails, I have friends in the restaurant biz who have offered to put him to work when he can.

My husband has a BA in Business Administration and is 1 test short of being a math teacher. He taught math in Jordan for a few years and then owned his own business for 6 years. He was doing pretty well before coming here. It took him 4 months to find a job here as people kept telling him he is wayy toooo overqualified for the positions he is applying for. He finally got a job at Wal-mart as a lumper, got promoted to lawn and garden, and promoted again to the electronics dept and has hated every minute of it. At least he gets to work with computers (which is his favorite thing). He has a friend in Texas who is offering to help him get settled there if he wants (he is really thinking of accepting that offer too :crying: ) I hope he finds something more suitable here.....

Please forgive me if I'm speaking out of school; my fiance isn't here yet. Someone who knows more can correct me if I'm wrong. You may want to be very careful about trying to get things set up with a U.S. school or employer before your fiance comes here. He's coming on the K-1 for the purpose of marrying you, and if DOS sees something else in the mix, they may question his intentions. Not to be critical at all. I have the very same concerns, and I'm reading this thread with interest. Our fiances' intentions just need to be crystal clear in the government's eyes. Best wishes to you both.

I'm the USC.

My husband isn't here yet either but he is in sales. I think the hard part will be the English. He speaks pretty good english but his writing is a different story and he'll have to fill out proposals and sales invoices so he's definitely taking some sort of ESL when he gets here. I picture him starting out as a sales rep at a Staples or something since he has a lot of experience with office supplies. He used to be a sales manager figuring out inventory levels for various companies and such so maybe he can work his way up to that again. Now he sells beauty products to various barber shops and salons and he's doing very well with that because of his personality but things work so differently here. Back there he just pops in and shows them what he has and they give him orders but I'm not sure if things are that "personable" here, you know?

anyway I don't see him having a problem just based on what his field is. I feel for those who have specialties such as doctors/lawyers though. That must be a pretty big ego buster when you come here and can't get hired. :(
