My only issue is that it's only the girls required to get the vaccine. It's approved for boys, too, and has shown to prevent genital warts & penile dysfunction. If men pass this on to women, they should get the vaccine, too.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

Ah I didn't know that! Well, genital warts sucks but isn't very serious, right? Doesn't that theoretically go away? But for passing it to girls who have not had the vaccine, that could be reason enough.

unless I am missing something, my understanding of all of this is that the HPV is linked to cervical cancer only. This isn't a vaccine against the STD.

The strains of HPV that cause genital warts are supposed to be the same ones that cause cervical cancer. So it would do both.

From the official website of the drug (gardasil.com):

GARDASIL is the only vaccine that may help guard against diseases that are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) Types 6, 11, 16, and 18:

• Cervical cancer

• Cervical abnormalities that can sometimes lead to cervical cancer

• Genital warts

HPV Types 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.

good start..they use vaccinations for measles, etc...i like the idea

Too much of the pharmaceutical company influencing public policy. I'd like to see an independent study with recommendations before taking such a bold step.

Exactly! I'm so tired of every time I go to the doctor they say "hey there is a new vaccine out that your child has to have." Some of you may know that my son is autisitc. He started showing odd characteristics about a month after his MMR when he was 18 months. Maybe it's a coincidence, I don't know. But the more reseach I have done on the vaccines and the mercury in it, the more I think this is what caused his problem. He was an outgoing little boy one month, and the next month would look at me with blank stares. Of course the FDA says no, no, no....this does not cause autism I do find it interesting though because now there is word that the FDA may take the mercury out of the vaccines. They say the amount of mercury is so small that it shouldn't make a difference, but think of these babies getting 4-5 shots when they are just a few weeks old. Their immune systems are not even fully developed yet. And think of how much mercury one will get in a lifetime. Makes me go hmmmmmmm.

I am amazed at how many of you are missing the "OMG OMG OMG" factor of this event. Texas is probably the most powerful stronghold of the rightwing Christian movement. For a Texas governor to do this, when (wrongly) most people think of HPV as a sexually transmitted disease, is a HUGE giant big deal. The Christians down here are already in an uproar at the governor "advocating sex for young girls"... yeah, I know. I don't understand these people either. But anyway... wow.

That's a pretty bold statement. I've lived in Texas my entire life, and I am neither "right-wing" nor am I "Christian." Am I conservative? You bet. But I tend to fall in the middle when it comes to politics, siding with both the Republicans and the Democrats when one or the other makes the most sense. Of course, sometimes that's rather difficult as there are times when neither party seems to know what it is doing...

Yes, there are "right-wing Christians" in Texas, no doubt about it. Is Texas the "most powerful stronghold of the right-wing Christian movement?" I certainly don't think so. I've been to other states (which I won't mention to avoid insulting anyone here) which have seemed far more right-wing and religious. I suppose it also depends on where you're talking about as well. In Houston (where I'm from), the people are fairly liberal. The city overwhelmingly voted for John Kerry last election, if you don't believe me. I suppose some of the smaller towns scattered across Texas might be more like your description, however. I try to avoid those "speed-traps" the best I can...

I don't really care why the governor mandated this because it will never harm those girls, as far as we know. You can't prevent HPV any other way besides abstinence since the virus can pass through a condom. If drug companies are responsible for this, then just this time that's ok with me. Mandating this will mean that young girls can be protected from the reactionary beliefs of their parents.

You said the key phrase, Alex: "As far as we know." I'm not against this vaccine; in fact, I think it's a pretty good idea. However, I don't think it's right to say it will "never harm" these girls. All medication has side-effects. Gardasil is a new drug, and we don't know what the effects of it might be down the road. True, it may protect against the few strains of HPV that can cause cerivcal cancer and/or genital warts, but what else might it do? Does it raise the incidence of another type of cancer? Does it cause birth defects? Will certain girls have allergic reactions to it? The list goes on and on, and the answer (unfortunately) is that we just do not know at this time.

Cancer is terminal, that's the difference I believe. Not positive.

Genital warts can be more than ugly. They can be obstructive and painful, and in general, genital warts do not go away by themselves. They need to be treated and removed (sometimes more than once, since the infection persists and the warts can grow back again) by a physician. Treatment usually involves anything from cryotherapy to using lasers to a procedure called LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure). If you don't get the warts treated, they could continue to grow and cause more problems, as well as running the risk of infecting your partner.

South Carolina came to mind when I read that. Anyone hear of Christian Exodus? This is what their front page says:

WELCOME TO THE CHRISTIAN EXODUS

ChristianExodus.org is moving thousands of Christians to South Carolina to reestablish constitutionally limited government founded upon Christian principles. It is evident that the U.S. Constitution has been abandoned under our current federal system, and the efforts of Christian activism to restore our Godly republic have proven futile over the past three decades. The time has come for Christian Constitutionalists to protect our liberties in a State like South Carolina by interposing the State's sovereign authority retained under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The foundations of the United States of America were laid upon these principles, that the rights of man are God-given and inviolate, that the sole purpose of government is to secure these rights, and that the only just powers of government are those specifically delegated by the people. The federal government is restrained by Constitutional Law, the Sovereign States, and the Citizens of those States, each one made in the image of God, with individual rights to life, liberty, and property.

The federal government was created to protect us from the very tyranny it now practices against us...

We are violated in our right to Life:

* Unborn babies are subject to slaughter by abortionists and their own mothers under any pretext whatsoever.

* The elderly, infirm, and disabled are subject to forced starvation and involuntary euthanasia.

* Citizens are subjected to the perils of imperialist entanglements abroad, and left unprotected from alien invaders at home.

We are violated in our right to Liberty:

* Abortion continues against the wishes of many States and in violation of the reserved powers of the States under the 10th Amendment.

* Christians are denied their rights to free speech, freedom of the press, the display of religious monuments, and other expressions of faith in the public sphere.

* Citizens are denied their rights to keep and bear arms sufficient for the restraint of tyranny.

* Men, women, and children are involuntarily exposed to the corrupting influences of homosexuality, pornography, and other perversities protected and financed by the national government.

* Sodomy is now legal and celebrated as "diversity" by order of the U.S. Supreme Court rather than condemned as perversion. Another usurpation of the rights of the States by the federal government.

* Families are subject to the trauma of no-fault divorce, often used to unjustly deny fathers equal protection under law and fundamental family rights.

* Children are seized from good parents arbitrarily and under false pretexts, and placed in the care of the state, as driven by federal funding.

* Federal courts prevent children in public schools from freely practicing Christianity.

* Children who pray in public schools are subject to prosecution.

* Federal expenditures on education are unconstitutional and promote revisionist history and statist sociology. Our schools continue to teach the discredited theory of Darwinian evolution.

We are violated in our right to Property:

* Private property is subject to unreasonable restrictions upon use and development by illegal federal environmental and zoning regulations.

* Private homes may now be arbitrarily seized by government for any reason whatsoever.

* Private commerce is restricted by overbearing and unwarranted government regulation and taxation.

* Citizens are taxed without their consent in ways that are unjust, unreasonable, and contrary to the public welfare.

Christians have seen and known all these things, and yet we have been unable to stem the tide against our liberties and our families. The Republican Party, which once promised to reduce the overbearing size of government, after gaining the reigns of power has expanded government to unprecedented reaches. Attempts at reform have proven futile for over three decades, and do not hold promise at the national level since Republicans and Democrats alike have abandoned regard for the Constitution and the proper role of government. ChristianExodus.org offers the opportunity to try a strategy not yet employed by millions of Christian conservatives who are geographically spread out and diluted at the national level. If we really mean to return to the Christian principles of constitutional American government, we must start at the local level and accelerate the process through mass migration. This is the Christian Exodus.

ChristianExodus.org is orchestrating the move of thousands of Christians to reacquire our Constitutional rights by electing State and local officials who will interpose on behalf of the people and refuse to enforce illegal federal acts. Click on our Plan of Action page to find out how we can experience God-honoring governance once again.

If you are tired of government-endorsed sin, then stand up and be counted!

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
