(CNN)The picture says it all: a black eye. Cuts and scrapes all over his face. A swollen lip.

Police say the mugshot was taken after William Mattson was accused of sexually assaulting a woman.

The police department in Conway, South Carolina, posted the photo on its Facebook page along with an explanation that its officers had gone to a residence about 1 a.m. Thursday after reports of a sexual assault.

They found 52-year-old Mattson in the condition seen in the photo. According to police, the injuries were inflicted "by someone acting in defense (of) the victim."

Conway Police charged Mattson with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in that city, just inland from Myrtle Beach.

Acting in defense of another is a complete defense, as long as the party acting in defense didn't use deadly force against the assailant where the assailant was not using deadly force against the victim. It really would be up to the DA to determine whether to charge, considering it's likely the boyfriend would have a complete defense here, in my opinion.

And yeah, I agree it's completely understandable and think the boyfriend did the right thing.

I don't think the bf is going to be/should be charged. If someone was attempting to sexually assault my wife there might not be enough of him left to arrest.

It is a plausible scenario that the man walked in on his GF and her side piece and she cries rape. Not to blame the alleged rape victim but those types of things do happen.

It's not self-defense but acting in defense of another. Even it was a scenario where it wasn't rape, if he reasonably believed he was acting in defense of his girlfriend, it would still be an effective defense.

In Texas he would be justified to shoot and kill the attacker.

It's pretty funny. A woman in the front row at the Alabama/Ohio St football game is rubbing the guy next to her on the back of the head. Once she realizes she's on tv she pulls her hand away and is all like "oh #######, I don't really know him". The look on her face is priceless, just like the kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
