I am a US citizen and live in Vermont. My girlfriend lives in the Dominican Republic. Her idea is for us to get married in the DR and then start the k1 process. Is there any pro's or con's to getting married in her country vs mine?

If I'm not mistaken the K1 process it's for people that are not married, because she will get a fiancee visa to enter the US and married within 90 days of her arrival. If you get married before starting the immigration process you will file for her as your wife not as your fiancee. I don't know how the K1 process is but when you petition for a spouse you have to complete an I-130 to USCIS and depending on how long you been married when she arrives to the US, she will either get a conditional green card which is 2 years or a 10 yrs. Agreed with what the others said.

If the idea is have the big wedding in the DR, then do it, but apply for the K3 or IR1/CR1 ..but that means that you have to return and wait for her until her process is approved.

If apply for K1, then she has to be in the US to marry within the 90 days..and maybe later, when she is able to travel, then you can have a church wedding if religious, or big wedding party in the DR.

K1 - Marry within 90 days after arrival in the US

K3 - Marry in the DR or US, but you have to return and wait for her. Marry in the US if she has a tourist visa, but she returns to the RD and then start the K3 process.

If you get married first, then you'd petition her for the CR-1 Spousal Visa.
