So some of you might remember our case. We were almost there and we had to take the detour of the waivers. Well, wavers got approved and we've have sent the passport, new medical exam and the other documents they needed to continue processing.

I was wondering what would be the first step once my fiance enters U.S. again. As I stated, she had a valid Social Security Number (and still have the card). Would she need to apply for a new one? I've read the instructions for SSN and it's says to wait about two weeks after entering to apply for a SSN. Does anybody has any previous experience like this or any thoughts to help us prepare.

Thanks again VJ members!

SSN is hers for life. So you have one less thing to worry about or do. She still needs the employment authorization (EAD) or the green card (GC) in order to legally work in the US. I am assuming her current SSC has the words "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION ONLY". Those can be removed once she has her GC. Also it is best to wait for the GC before getting her name changed on the SSC to avoid and problems with the SSA--if she is going to use your last name.

Congratulations on getting all this sorted out.

Thanks Dave. We were planing on changing her name right after marriage, as the k1 follow chart sugests. Wouldn't it be too much to change name onto her GC if we do it after?

Thanks again.

That SSN is hers for life. Follow the Guides for AOS.

Thanks again.

The name that goes on the GC is the name that you use on the application. The SSA typically wants to match the name on your SSC with what you have given to the US government--i.e GC, EAD/AP, name on passport. Their rules may have changed, but you used to be able to use a Marriage Certificate and the old SSC to change the last name after marriage. Lately I have heard they want to see a GC or other document with that name on it from the USCIS in order to process a name change. So apply for the GC in her married name. Once the GC arrives she can change her name on the SSC and get the "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION ONLY" removed at the same time.
