Pending I-751, could my husband drive when the CA DL expired?

Hi, we've just mailed out our I-751 this week and with the looks of it it's taking about over 6 month for approval. My husband CA DL will expire on 3/12/15, could he still drive then and just carry around his NOA? Or does he need to renew DL with NOA?

Please advise, thank you!

No, he may not drive after his DL expires. He'll have to renew it before that date.

I am not sure the DMV will renew it on the NOA alone, but that is already a start. His best bet is to set up an appointment with them, and present what paperwork he has available.

Other posters from different states have talked about how the DMV employees don't believe or understand that the extension letter actually is valid when presented together with an "expired" green card.

Your husband should try to renew it with the NoA and politely escalate if they don't accept it. It wouldn't hurt to print out any resources you can find on the USCIS website that explain the extension letter's validity and legitimacy.
