So we are still waiting for the wife's card and no RFE. Do you guys recommend I submit a case inquiry or just keep waiting. They are going right through the February filers, it seems they just passed us. To me it's no big deal to keep waiting but the wife took a job at Walmart about 2 months ago and today she said the manager keeps asking her if she got her new greencard yet. When she applied she had to show her greencard which was expired in March and we showed the extension letter. She got hired and I thought everything was ok since the letter says you have a one year extension to live and work in the USA. But today she says it is Walmart policy to only give 3 months extension not the full year. I said what???? How can they do this? So if she doesn't get the card by the end of July she'll lose her job i guess. So I told my wife now I'll have to get a lawyer and sue Walmart for discrimination or something. This is crazy don't they know the law? Just getting impatient.

Crispy

I am going through same situation. I will have to take break from work untill I get the renewed GC. I thought I was the only one who is waiting. Please keep posting..

This is really frustrating, I just got a new job and havent filled out the i-9 app, what happens if they ask questions? Do I need to lose my career because these guys are slow? This is not fair at all I can't believe walmart is doing it to your wife its ridicules that they are like that.

I am going to have to talk to someone at Walmart about this. Can't be right for her to lose her job when she is authorized for a one year extension. I was doing some reading and on the I-9 form every employer is supposed to fill out for a new employee there are also other things listed to allow work. You can show your green card for proof of identity and authorization to work or you can also show a drivers license and a social security card. My wife just got her drivers license and she has a social security card so everything should be ok when I talk to them I hope. I also read the employer is not allowed to chose for you what documents you can show, they can not tell you that you have to show your green card. that is discrimination. Read the instructions on the USCIS form I-9. The problem is trying to talk to idiots that know more than you.

Good luck, but based on my school experience with expired GC they will tell you SORRY, If a person is not a citizen they must provide legal documentation of their residency, expired GC is no good, also SSN and DL won't apply since she is not a citizen, but then again big company like Walmart has their rules, they might fire her and rehire her once she shows valid GC or work permit, also if they don't rehire her this is when you get a lawyer or just e-mail the local news and have them spread the news.

Why not just get a stamp in the passport? I-551 stamp is as good as I-551 card.

yes n-o-l-a is right, i did the same thing. i went to a local office and had my passport stamped because my greencard was late too and my employer was already asking for it.and they honored my stamp:) goodluck!

Read the instructions for employment eligibility verification Form I-9. The only thing that should be needed is a drivers license and social security card. The employer can not specify a certain document like a green card for verification. It says nothing about being a citizen for these things. only that you need a document from list B and a document from list C.

I thought when you got your social security card that makes you eligible for work. Did you other guys show your drivers license and ss card? I don't know what my wife showed when she got hired maybe she just showed her green card and that is the reason for the re-verification I don't know for sure.

I think you are correct and SS card can be used for that matter HOWEVER it's the case ONLY if your SS card has no restrictions on it. Not relevant in our case....

There is no restrictions on our social security card. Anyways I am really confused and feel like I am out in the cold for no good reason, there's no reason I should be put in this kind of situation at all. They should do their job and get us processed. It doesn't make since that Cali is getting approved left and right and we need to wait like that. They must know that this could effect a misinformed employer and then are you really going to fight your employer for firing you??? Are you really going to go to court for this??? Even if he is "not allowed" to fire me or you or anybody else if it happens at the end of the day what can you really do???

Great, I am going to have a great weekend.

Idan, some SS cards can have restrictions, for example if someone changed status from student visa to green card, or H1 B visa to green card. These conditions can be removed at the SSA office once you obtain your initial GC, or even now. even with the extension letter.

if you have restrictions on your SS card, go to the SSA office and have them removed. they will do it.

It is the SS card that governs Job situations. What card do citizens have to show for employment? None except for SS card. No citizens need to provide passport for Job. Most citizens probably have never even obtained a passport.
