My wife had her interview today in France while on a tourist visa and it was approved. She will get her passport back in about a week or 10 days.

The important point to note here is that it does not matter what visa you are on in the country where you take the interview. The US embassy does not care about it. The residency requirement only comes into play while actually applying for the I-130 and NVC process.

Here are the questions asked during the interview:

Who is the petitioner?

How long have you been married?

Where did you meet?

What was he doing in XXX?

When did he go back to USA?

Is he a citizen?

What does he do?

Where did the marriage take place?

How was the wedding ?

Did he meet your family?

Did you meet his family ? Why not?

When is the last time you saw him?

Did you live together? For how long

How do your family feel about you marrying a foreigner?

What do you do?

What was your major?

Congratulations to you both!!

I only want to ask to be very careful when making such a statement.

It does matter and it depends greatly on the particular embassy. But i am happy that embassy in France has been flexible in this matter.

Would you know of a case where one was prevented from taking the interview while on a tourist visa or not having residency at the time of interview? I was unable to find one. If you could point to any threads verifying where it did matter, that would help a lot for others in the same situation.

After the interview, one of the staff mentioned to my wife that residency etc comes into play during the I-130 and NVC process and is unrelated to interview. They cannot restrict one from taking an interview which is scheduled at the consulate but they may hold on to the passport for many days etc which should be taken into consideration while handing over the passport while being on a short tourist visa because the visa itself may expire causing troubles with the host country.

Thanks for giving example about yourself in Canada which would be quite useful to those applying in Canada.

In case of France, the staff specifically mentioned that they cannot deny interview based on residency once it has been scheduled already. I hope all of this helps the next person who is in the situation and is looking for info on this website.

BTW, US embassy in France also does not allow those who are non-residents to apply for visa to USA. In case of my wife, she was a resident but the residency expired after case was completed. Her home country strongly suggesting interviewing in France itself and US embassy in France only raised the concern that the passport may be retained for days or weeks. I am stating a very specific case where one was a resident in the country through the entire I-130 and NVC process and scheduled for interview and then gave up residency because of no intent to continue staying further due to the move to USA.

Husband's visa was approved in Dublin today! He said the interview was very straightforward - They asked how did we meet, how long have we known each other, did we have any kids and who was the sponsor. He said they spoke to him for about 5 min. They didn't ask for the revised I864(petitioner) the NVC checklisted us for or any secondary documentation. Such a relief to know that this process is finished and he can now join us in California where we have been living for the last 6 months. My kids were jumping around the house this morning with joy! Yippee!!!!

I chose the (1) I need to register an immigrant visa appointment.

Thanks for the response, I will email them.

Thanks, I wasn't sure which one I needed to choose. My friend also chose option 1 and she has everything scheduled already.

She also said they will respond to our email and the email will contain a link so we can schedule our bio-metrics appt. The response should arrive 3-4 business days after we sent the initial email. I am hoping to have a response by end of week.

So...my interview is set for Feb 10 at 10:30. I scheduled with Medisys yesterday, and the best he could do for me was Feb 3 at 11:30. I live in Winnipeg and explained that we only want to make the trip to Montreal once. He said that because there is a weekend in there, in order to ensure that the results would be done in time for the interview, the latest appointment available which would safely work for me was the 3rd. The guy was really nice, and told me to bring 5 passport photos, my immunization record, my interview letter, and told me the cost would be $310 (unless any immunizations are needed) payable in cash, debit or credit card.

I am not sure if this long wait time is normal even with a weekend, but my husband and I have planned to use his hotel points for 7 nights, and a coworker of mine who is from Montreal is providing me with lots of tourism info, so we are making the trip a sort-of honeymoon :).

Looking forward to the next step of the journey in less than a month! :dancing:
