Any downside to requesting an expedite at this point (NVC)

Hello all,

We are about one week into the 60 day document review at the NVC, for my step son's visa. We recently learned that his grandmother, who he is staying with, and is his primary caretaker, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She has started chemotherapy, and depending on her reaction to the drugs, she may not be able to take care of our son very well (he is 11).

We are considering asking for an expedite, but are curious if there are any downsides now. If it's denied, will it delay the normal processing of his application?

03/28/2014 Case Number assigned

04/01/2014 DS-261 Available and completed

04/07/2014 AOS and IV bills paid

04/09/2014 Sent AOS package

04/10/2014 AOS package delivered to NVC

04/15/2014 IV package delivered to NVC

04/17/2014 NVC says "one piece of mail" regarding case received, can't specify which one AOS or IV

04/21/2014 "Two pieces of mail received", so AOS and IV packages both logged in.

05/06/2014 Case Complete.

05/13/2014 Interview scheduled

06/12/2014 Interview at Kiev Embassy

06/12/2014 Visa Approved!

Expedite requests overall slow the process but from an individual perspective I see little harm.

Expedite requests at the NVC level don't slow things down at all. It won't hurt to try. Send your request to the NVC expedite email with the evidence. They usually review those fairly fast

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal
