When renting a truck, ur pretty limited as man rentals places do not allow cross border transactions. U can cal lryder or penske, but when I called a few yrs back, they said no!! My only option was Uhaul! I had an ok experience with them, but of course others have not!! I think it depnds more on the place u rent the truck from! There are great operators, and crappy ones!! best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I am not sure how stuck on driving over the border you are. But I used UPACK to move from Calgary to Chicago. Rates were quite reasonable. You load and unload your stuff. The only down fall is..that you cannot have your things shipped until you have crossed the border. I just Faxed I-194 to The Upack office and they shipped the sameday and got here in about 5 business days. Just another option.

when calculating prices, ensure u calculate the cost of gas!! I got around 10 mpg with the uhaul!! Of course I was doing 75-80 mph!! I love to drive, so I did not even consider other options!!!

The only company that would let me do a one-way, cross border rental was U-Haul - and I called them all. Honestly though, I weighed the costs carefully with u-pack. If I was not driving anyway (having to rent a car regardless) it would have probably been easier to do upack.

If David had in fact come up to meet me for the interview and we drove back together, I would just have gone the way of shipping my stuff. It would have all fit into a cube anyway and I would not have had the hassle of driving the gas guzzling monster back alone.

As for fuel prices, from Toronto to Baltimore - I filled up once in Canada ($75) and then stopped two more times in the States ($70).

Mo

p.s. IF you can get hold of a pick up or SUV type vehicle, and IF you don't have alot of stuff, you could also consider getting a covered trailer from Uhaul. Much cheaper.
