I tend to question the validity of the testing requirements. I don't think there should a test to qualify for naturalization, especially one where they give you all the questions and answers in advance. People simply memorize the answers for the test and then most likely forget most of it. So, it is just a test to see if you can memorize test answers and that isn't the true spirit of intent of the requirement. I bet a majority of natural born U.S. citizens would not be able to answer 70 out of the 100 questions correctly, which makes the entire process very ironic. Jay Leno had a skit in his show, where hosts would go around U.S. cities and ask people similar questions. It was funny, but also sad to see how many people don't know basic U.S. history or how our government functions.

Well said. The "civics" test is somewhat of a joke, in my opinion. I already knew almost everything in that booklet because I'm interested in knowing them and constantly keep up with my local, state , national and international news. I'm also interested in history and not just that of the U.S. but World history. Still, it's a little much to ask of most people to know all of that. So the test will have to do. It covers at least the minimum one has to know to begin learning more. Though, as you said, most people would memorize it for the test and forget about it in a week. This kind of annoys me just like those who can't wait to get U.S. citizenship so they can go live overseas. Grrrr.

I agree that the test is silly... I don't really see a point in having a test at such a late point. The test is so simple for anyone who's ever read anything about the US and for those who haven't it is (as you said) a memorization exercise.

Some countries (like the UK) have a rather difficult citizenship test, but I don't think that's a good approach either... I'm more in favor of learning than testing.

Some countries require immigrants to sit through civics classes when they get their green cards. I like that idea because I think it's important for immigrants to learn about their new home. I'm not suggesting anything overly onerous, but a few sessions on American history and government shouldn't be too hard.

So i had my interview at the Phoenix office 2 hours ago, and got recommended for approval yaaay. Got a nice officer. Questions where: age for selective service, ocean on the east coast, when constitution was written, state that borders canada, what is freedom of religion, how many us senators. Told him about my ticket i didnt mention on the form and had a receipt and certificate for the defensive driving class i took.

No. You don't have an open case with the FBI so they can't talk to you about it. USCIS can follow up on their request for a background check if they want to.

I'm assuming that it's been 4 months since your fingerprints (not since your application).

The first thing I would do is set up an Infopass and ask what's going on. If they tell you that there's a backlog, this is probably true (applications have increased and they will likely continue to increase throughout 2015 and more so in 2016). If they tell you that everything is within normal processing times, then they're not being honest. Insist on creating a service request because your application has been stuck for more than 120 days if they don't want to, ask them for a specific date after which they will create a service request. If they say you just have to wait, ask them what happens if it's been 2 years, will they look into your case then?

Either way, i would give them another month or so and then contact my congressional representative. A congressional inquiry into your case sometimes speeds things up (there are many examples of this on VJ), but is only effective when you've waited the full 4 months since the last action on your case. Look up your 3 representatives (1 congressman and 2 senators) and see if one of them has an immigration issues employee on staff. Contact that person and give them all your details. They will contact USCIS for you. Often, USCIS just responds to the inquiry by saying that they are waiting for a background check, but then miraculously, the background check is completed withing a day or a week of the inquiry. If that doesn't help (it may take a month or so for all this communication) then you may have to take legal action.

No. You don't have an open case with the FBI so they can't talk to you about it. USCIS can follow up on their request for a background check if they want to.

I'm assuming that it's been 4 months since your fingerprints (not since your application).

The first thing I would do is set up an Infopass and ask what's going on. If they tell you that there's a backlog, this is probably true (applications have increased and they will likely continue to increase throughout 2015 and more so in 2016). If they tell you that everything is within normal processing times, then they're not being honest. Insist on creating a service request because your application has been stuck for more than 120 days if they don't want to, ask them for a specific date after which they will create a service request. If they say you just have to wait, ask them what happens if it's been 2 years, will they look into your case then?

Either way, i would give them another month or so and then contact my congressional representative. A congressional inquiry into your case sometimes speeds things up (there are many examples of this on VJ), but is only effective when you've waited the full 4 months since the last action on your case. Look up your 3 representatives (1 congressman and 2 senators) and see if one of them has an immigration issues employee on staff. Contact that person and give them all your details. They will contact USCIS for you. Often, USCIS just responds to the inquiry by saying that they are waiting for a background check, but then miraculously, the background check is completed withing a day or a week of the inquiry. If that doesn't help (it may take a month or so for all this communication) then you may have to take legal action.

actually i did Infopass on May-05 and they told me that cass is pending for review that's all they said, i will be 4 month since my fingerprint on early June...so are you advice calling congressman office if i don't receive any update by early june or what i should do? please advise ..thanks a lot

Just my opinion, I would schedule another Infopass for after it has been 4 months. If you did your bio on February 1st, schedule an apppointment for a few days after June 1st. Make sure it's veen 120 days. I wouldn't contact my representatives until I've tried everything with USCIS first, but that's just me. Since you went for an Infopass before the 120 days, their response was pretty standard and they may not have even looked at your file.

They will do one of two things:

1- they'll tell you everything is normal.

2- they'll start a service request.

If it's the 1st one, then give them a week or two (sometimes they'll update your case after an infopass) and if you don't hear anything, write your congressman.

If it's thr 2nd one, they'll tell you how long the service request will take. It's either 30 days or 45 days. Wait for the number of days stated and if you don't hear anything contact your congressman.
