You can apply for a SSN. Give it 10-14 days for your new status to populate the database. (That's what SSA office told us). You don't want to try, and not be found, then they manually verify which can be a considerable delay.

Not sure what you'r adjusting from as you have no timeline, however I got my SSN long before I had my combo card. I had passport with K1 visa in it, I94 and the SSN5 form filled out, that was it.

I am adjusting from an ESTA, wife and child both born USA citizens.

Do I have to go to the Social Security office or is a SSN application done online?

Not relevant, and you mean VWP.

Different routes different timing that is all.

You must go in person and endure the long wait. Hopefully you get a properly trained employee. The SSA seems to hire people and not train them.

Good luck,

Dave

You can download the application, complete the application, submit it at a SSA office for processing, or you can go to a SSA office, complete the application, submit it a SSA office for processing. (The first method saves you some time waiting in line.)
