Does anyone know of a way for my fiance's kids to prepare for our US High School system? They are in private schools in Kenya, but I would still like to have them review some Math, English, History, Science materials that may be used to place them once they arrive in the USA. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Mod hat off

I'm sure it will vary State to State, but for my kids when they started school here the counselor went through their transcript from their old high school to figure out what they had taken and how it matched up to the requirements for school in Arkansas. My husband asked about a placement test but we were told they do not exist, so who knows how the schools where you are will be. The best thing I can say is look up the high school graduation requirements for your State it will tell you the courses that are required some schools go above that requirement but it will let you see what they need and you can compare it to what they take back home.

Do you know if the same applies to middle school? I wonder if I should contact one of the schools in the area where my daughter will be attending. Our kids in Scotland start school earlier than they do in Florida so she started Grade 1 a couple of months after turning 4. While she may be in a higher year than her peers, she will have so much catching up to do with a completely new school system and different content. I'd quite honestly prefer her to be with her own age group than keep her in the year/grade she is in.

My two in middle school continued in the same grade, although a friend of mine she moved to Ohio and they put her son back a grade because of his age. I think they try to look at all the angles, grade, age and size of the child.

You could google what the schools are teaching for her grade to see if she would actually be behind. A lot of homsechooling info is out there that you can compare to what she is taking.
