Obamacare for CR-1 Wife

I didn't add my wife to my work health policy as she will be out of country until her CR-1 visa is issued. I don't expect her to arrive until the second half of the year. Will I need to get one of the Obamacare policies to avoid a penalty once she gets here?

You should be able to add her to your work health insurance plan but if not you can buy insurance on the marketplace as this is a life event etc. This has to be done within 60 DAYS OF ARRIVING (visa arrival date in her passport) or else she will have to wait until November (next enrolment date). They will ask her for her A# and she may have to provide a copy of her visa etc at some future point in time. Just went through all of this! Shop around if you buy on the marketplace - you don't necessarily have to buy on the marketplace you can buy directly from the insurance company. They will all ask for the same thing (A# and date).

I'll first try with my federal employer and if not then this will work. I was expecting her to arrive October, but I think we maybe looking at August. These are just rough estimates on my part. As most know with this journey it can get delayed or take longer than expected. I'll of course add her to my policy for 2016.

When your wife arrive that will give you a special election period of 60 days upon her arrival as you need a social security number to file for Obama care plan for her. You may want to compare base on your income as well as base on how much your job insurance charges for dependant ad on which is more eeconomical for you.

Also to answer your question about the penalty if your wife arrives arrival in October you must have coverage on place for her to avoid a pro rated penalty for the months she was eligible for a plan and did not get one. The penalty is 2 pecent of the annual income. They will pro rate it for the last two months of not having coverage is you get a plan that starts let say January 1.
