Another Fallen Hero

At 8am today, I got an email from my husband titled "Sad News", I almost didn't want to open it.

Last month, Jan. 19, my daughter went to see Col. Olsen, an ophthalmologist at an Army Hospital in Heidelberg. He's such a nice doctor, who evidently loves his job. He was very patient with our daughter and he took time to explain to us why our daughter needs further evaluation by a Pediatric Retinal Specialist.

The following day we called his office to follow up on something, we were told he went on an emergency leave.

My husband found out this morning, from a fellow doctor, that Col. Olsen's son, Army Spc. Toby R. Olsen, was killed in Iraq.

Please pray for him and his family.

I'm very sorry to hear that. It's always sad news whenever someone loses their life...

I don't even know the guy, but I was so moved that I was in tears after I read hubby's email. When something like this happens, when you know somebody who is close to, or knows somebody who died during the war, it makes it all the more real to you. Like the war is just in your backyard, I know some people would rather not think about it and live in a bubble called denial, but we cannot deny the fact that soldiers there are dying everyday - somebody's husband, father, friend, brother, etc.

I worked closely with military folks while I was in the US, I have met and shook hands with soldiers who never came back from their deployment, and then met their widows and kids. It was too much to bear, I cannot imagine half the pain and suffering the families are going through.

My greatest wish is to see all these brave men and women safely back home....soon!
