Hello,

Is it even possible to ship my things to USA while moving there on K1 visa? I know this one is tricky, because K1 visa is not an immigrant visa. What are the laws regarding shipping things (regular household objects, i.e. books, artwork, small furniture, nothing too expensive, no antiques etc) while moving to USA on K1 visa? I cannot find any information on this subject.

I'm from Poland.

Technically a K-1 is dual-intent, but it's essentially treated as an immigrant visa for many purposes.

Yeah, I do understand, I need more information on this specific subject though. I know most people just don't ship anything while moving on K1 visa, but I wanna know my options. I just need a referral for further info, I can do all the reading by myself, but seriously, I find tons of info of moving overseas from USA to any other country, but practically none on doing it the other way. Anything, including expressions I can put in google, that will help me with getting more info will be extremely helpful.

I mean legal stuff referring to customs, what constitutes immigration purposes, is K1 visa considered here (since you are not receiving GC automatically) etc. Most countries have certain laws that allow for custom-free transportation of things if they are household personal objects (to certain extent). I usually don't have issues finding more info, but this is simply killing me.

Tyene,

You may need to provide a few more details or information. When you say that you are shipping things to the U.S. do you mean using a shipping company? Or are they items that you are bringing here in the U.S. with you when you come to the U.S. There won't be anything restricting what you are able to bring based on your K1 entry visa anymore than a U.S. citizen. And as far as using an over seas shipper the only thilng that will limit is the same. You wont be able to ship anything that is potentially hazardous or dangerous, I believe household goods are okay. I would think all that you will need is a valid name and address to where you are shipping to. Can you be more specific regarding the items that you are referring to and the shipping method?

I can say my husband (K1) shipped 23 boxes of household items via a container on a boat. We happened to live near a port and did the customs clearance and picked up ourselves, but the companies that do door to door international moving take care of that for you. Consider yourself immigrant and use the info on this page to start. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/354/~/moving-to-the-u.s.---duty-free-entry-of-unaccompanied-goods,-firearms,-gift

Google search: cbp immigrating unaccompanied goods

Things you ship whether via boat or plane or mail are considered unaccompanied goods and have a set of rules. What comes in with you in your luggage is different as that is accompanying you.

The issue is with customs. Usually when you move from one country to another as an immigrant your household goods are considered customs-free and you don't pay a large amount of money for customs. It is different than bringing souvenirs or buying goods abroad and bringing them to USA. As an US citizen you are restricted in that regard. But immigrants usually have a period of time in which they can bring goods relatively custom-free as it is considered special situation.

Thank you so much! This is the info I was looking for! I am very grateful for your response :)
