Police: Officer fatally shoots armed man in town near Ferguson, Missouri

(CNN) -- A police officer shot and killed an armed man late Tuesday in Berkeley, Missouri, said St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman.

Berkeley is a St. Louis suburb that borders on the city of Ferguson, where the controversial shooting of black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer in August triggered nationwide protests.

Demonstrators appeared after Tuesday's shooting, and there was a scuffle, but the crowd thinned out before daybreak.

In Tuesday's shooting, the deceased man's mother, Toni Martin, identified him as 18-year-old Antonio Martin.

Police say the officer shot him in self-defense.

Cops: Officer fatally shot armed man

The officer with the City of Berkeley Police Department had encountered two men during a routine check at a Mobil gas station, Schellman said. He got out of his squad car and approached them.

One of the men pointed a gun at the officer, who fired multiple times at him, fatally wounding him. The second man fled, police said.

Later, yellow markers were placed around the scene at the gas station. Next to one of them was a handgun lying in the parking lot, video from CNN affiliate KMOV showed.

Schellman said that the killed man's handgun was recovered at the scene.

Feet away from the weapon, a body lay covered up. It was later placed on a stretcher and loaded into the back of a van.

A good chunk of the wild reactions we see after these incidents are incited by shoddy and reckless reporting. Hopefully the media has learned a lesson and maybe word has been sent to the major news networks to tone things down and report the facts rather than to sensationalize at all costs.

Berkeley officer kills suspect who pulled gun; police say victim was 'known' to police ..

The officer saw two people on the parking lot in the 6800 block of North Hanley Road and began talking with them.

Belmar said one of the people approached the driver's side of the vehicle.

One of the individuals "produced a pistol with his arm straight out, pointing it straight at the officer kind of from across the hood," Belmar said.

At that point, the chief said, the officer got his service revolver "and fired what we think is three shots."

The officer, who is 34 and white, is a 6-year veteran of the department, Belmar said

the 9 mm gun found on the suspect had five rounds in the chamber and one round in the magazine. He also said the gun was "defaced."

Police plan media briefing Wednesday morning

St. Louis County Police Sgt. Brian Schellman says police will give a media briefing about the shooting in Berkeley at 7 a.m.

Meanwhile, Schellman said he has seen video from cameras at the gas station where the shooting occurred. He said that footage will be released soon.

"You can see the gentleman raise a handgun and the officer fire a shot," Schellman said.

He said that, based on footage he has seen, the officer was carrying a flashlight when he approached two people at the Mobil gas station and engaged in a conversation. He also said it appears that the officer did not pull his weapon until one of those people pulled a gun.

Schellman said police are looking for the second person who was with the person the officer fatally shot. Police have not released that person's identity. (5:50 a.m., Jesse Bogan)
