I have been following this site to guide my fiance (now wife) through the process. She is from Russia and finally came over on a K-1 Visa last week, we did the deed today and got married. What is next, the SSN? It looks like we skipped that part on the flow chart, now she changed her name on the marriage certificate to my last name- is this going to cause any hiccups in our SSN process? I am guessing we need to wait until our county returns the marriage certificate copy to us and then proceed to the SS office to apply for a SSN, then I can work on getting her enrolled in my health insurance, drivers license, etc. Is this all correct, or am I missing anything?

It is almost Christmas and we have really been lucky with how smooth things have gone, we met in March 2014. There isn't much I can do until after the new year since all the government buildings will be shut down for the holidays anyway I guess.

Best option is wait the marriage certificate and get ssn, with the marriage certificate she can get her name change on the ssn card.

Wait until she has her EAD. Often there are issues if you apply for SSN in married vs visa name. You can try of course but don't be too concerned if they won't do it.

The only hiccup it may cause with her new name is that her passport is in her old name. She needs a new one in her married name if she needs to travel with her green card after AOS or with advanced parole.

since it was just last week that she arrived,

she can apply for ssn in VISA NAME,

which is useful for doing stuff like banking, utility bills, etc...

take the passport, printed I-94 from the I-94 website, apply at SSA office ONLY in VISA name.

K-1 visa holders can easily get a SSN in VISA name, also easy to change it after a federal ID [EAD card, for example] shows the married name and expiration date ...

I not recommend applying in MARRIED NAME this week, as they will immediately require and start DHS Verification, which takes up to 2 months, and by the time it comes back, there may not be any more duration on the I-94 [rather, 76 days already passed and she's not eligible]

I too highly suggest that you go to the SSA and apply in the visa/passport name. Don't even mention the marriage or discuss name change. The she gets a number which is useful. Later she can sort out the name change when she gets EAD or the greencard.
