Hi - hopefully someone can shed some light - can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I have started the process of changing my last name to my husband's last name - already done on my Ontario Health Card and DL. I am just not sure about the Passport. I didn't realize when I started the Green Card application that I could apply in my husband's name simply because we were married.. so the GC will be issued in my maiden name. Do I keep my passport and GC in my maiden name? Do I change my passport to my married name, keep the GC in my maiden name and just show my marriage certificate when I travel? Do I pay the nearly $500 and have them both changed? Would truly appreciate some advice.

Thank you very much.

I would change your passport if you want the green card in married name. Otherwise your next opportunity would be when you remove conditions, if applicable. Get the passport done before interview and you won't have an issue because visa comes in passport name.

I assume you are doing the ir1/cr1 process?

I am doing the IR1/CR1 process... but I applied in my Maiden name.. that's what on all of my packets (i864, etc etc)..so I assume I'll have to change the name on my GC 2 years after receiving it. Are you saying that if I change my Passport now, I will get my GC in my married name? I thought it would be issued in my maiden name as I applied with my maiden name.

What is important is the name on the passport at interview. Bring both passports and get your visa in passport name, green card in visa name.

My case is already complete and the NVC.. so I can get my new Passport before my interview. Will this affect my Police Certificate that I have in my maiden name only?

Not unless you've changed your name for 6 months or more in Canada.
