CR-1 SSN question

So my wife has been told by the local SSA office that she cannot get a SSN until her Green Card is issued. PoE was 12/5/14

They even told her that the PoE officer was wrong and she couldn't get one until then.

We checked the box on paperwork to have a SSN issued.

My question is this, is there a number I can call to check on the status of a SSN issuance, to determine a hold-up?

SSA person was wrong. Your wife's endorsed visa IS a valid green card for 1 year. As to find out when her hard copy will arrive, check your ELIS account. Normally takes 1-3 months. Try a new SSA officer, or office.

Thank you for confirming what I suspected about the CR1 / Green Card stuff.

We never registered at ELIS so I don't have any case associated with the account I just created...

Oh you need to pay $165 with ELIS (special USCIS website) to get the hard copy green card! Do it asap!

Yes. It's the green card production fee. Don't pay it and you don't have a green card after 1 year.

In 2 years minus 90 days you pay another 595 to remove conditions too.

Hahah, the stuff just keeps piling up, you'd think this could just be a part of the whole Visa process...

there was a sheet in the visa packet issued from the consulate, covering ELIS fee.

re: SSN - SSA clerk wrong. go in again, ask for supervisor.

for CR-1, IR-1 visa holders, is lag in SAVE database system from CBP and the POE - usually 2 to 3 weeks past the POE date - finally the SAVE database is update.

SSA Clerks use SAVE database at the office to verify yer eligibility. It's quite possible that you weren't found in the SAVE database lookup by VISA Name or A# - Suggest you go back next week, and try it again.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thank you for the excellent break down Darnell.

Will give it another week and see where things sit next week. Next time I'll go in with her and work with the SSA folks to figure our life out!

One further thing that is of a concern for me is that we didn't receive any packet from Montreal that told us to register ELIS or anything else. Are we missing steps that are prolonging the process? Or are you referring to the packet that was shipped to Loomis center that we gave to CBP?

na - should have been either/or - either as part of the paperwork given on interview day, or outside of the sealed envelope that loomis sent - there was an immigrant data sheet attached to the outside of the sealed envelope but inside of the loomis packet. sometimes it's stapled, sometimes loose, but it's not the ELIS sheet, at all.
