Immigration lawyer? Yes. GOOD Immigration lawyer? NO! What for?

Hi,

Its kind of a long story as to why I need an immigrations lawyer. The short version is that I applied for a visa when I should have been applying for a green card. I am residing in the US and all my paperwork has been approved, but they sent it back to the UK, which is my country of origon. So all my information is now at the American Embassy in London and I need to get it back and apply for a green card instead of a visa. I am married to a US citizen, and I need to get the green card. Some people suggested I should get an immigrations lawyer, but I can't seem to find any in my area, I have tried google.

Immigration law is federal so it doesn't really matter where your lawyer is located. Ours is in Houston, TX and as far as I'm concerned she's one of the best. Laurel Scott...website is www.visacentral.net. She specializes in the I-601 waiver but she's very knowledgable about pretty much all immigration issues. She has a free chat on Wednesday from 11 am - noon Central time.

Thanks for the information. The reason I wanted a lawyer close to where I live is incase I need to go to their office for something. Don't you need to go to the office for a consultation? That was the reason I want one in my area.

No, that's not necessary. My case was carried out entirely over phone and e-mail and it was excellently done. You will probably find that attending one of her free chats will give you enough info that a consultation is no longer needed. She will tell you exactly what you need to do and whether or not you need a lawyer assistance. If after that you are interested in hiring her, do an e-mail or phone consult, then she will begin on your case.

Pauline,

Looks like you got some good advice and perhaps info on a good lawyer. Our lawyer was also from a diff state. The long dist lawyer was not problem, just that the lawyer was just another usless lawyer.

Good luck in your Journey.

That's the hardest part about finding an immigration attorney. I can assure you that Laurel is a good choice. She is very knowledgable and also very honest, doesn't give you false hopes, but also is not afraid to try things that other lawyers only dream of. If you go to her web site you will get a good feel as to how involved she is in the immigration community, and she has even posted a memo for OTHER attorneys to use on writing an I-601 Waiver hardship letter. How many attorneys give out free advice? To her, it's all about the client, not about the money. She is a fierce advocate for immigrant rights.

Yes I got some good advice I'm glad I posted on this site. It seems strange to me that when you contact immigrations they don't tell you what you need to know, that has been my experience anyway. And yet, I come on here and get my questions answered, this is a good place to find out information. Thanks.

Hi Pauline,

Good luck on your immigration journey! Yes, I think that it is a good idea to hire a lawyer, regardless of the situation, as you never know what might happen during the immigration process.

For me, I did hire a lawyer for my situation, and I know it definately helped. If you need a recommendation for a good immigration lawyer her in NYS, feel free to PM me and I'll be glad to give you more info about the lawyer we hired (located in NYS too, an extra bonus for you, since you are in Rome, NY).

I'm looking for a immigrations lawyer in Upstate New York. In the city of Rome NY preferably. If not as close as possible to Rome NY. Does anyone know of one and can give me details? Thanks.
