Hi Guys,

I have a quick question. I have been employed with the same company for the past 6 years. Hypothetically, if I make $60 a year and the letter from my employer says the same, if my W2 says I make $90 a year will that be a problem?

I recently moved to Chicago from Dallas and my company paid for everything which is grossed up into my salary in 2006. My W2 is going to say I make alot more money than I really do due to this benefit. I am concerned because the salary on the employment letter will be different than my W2 from the same company.

Any thoughts?

Edit for spelling errors.....

Ok, ok...it's nice to know I'm not the only one. My contract (and letter) state that I earn a bit more than my W2s and my last paystub from 2006 (which I think say the same as the W2). Maybe this is normal?

I'm a teacher so we have hold back every month so we can receive our normal pay checks during the summer. I wondered if that was a reason for the discrepancy.

I will give the consulate what they ask for, but I just wondered, is there an explanation for this?

Who knows?

I'll ask my brother-in-law who is an accountant.

I'm not worried.

I'm not saying you should be worried.... You don't know if you have tax deferred compensation going into a retirement plane (401K, 403b)?

My W-2 taxable income is 15% lower than my base wage because I defer that amount into my 401K and I won't pay taxes on it until I withdraw it. It is a very common situation.

YMMV

I do not think it will matter as long as you meet the financial obligation of being above the poverty level, which proves you can financially support the number of people in your household, and your fiancée/fiancé will not become a burden of the state.

Edit for spelling errors.....

It shouldnt be as for me they asked my wife for my tax returns which in turn comes from your W-2, I had a job letter which they saw but requested I only supply salary through proven ways such as tax records.

I'm in the same situation. My letter from employer said I make $60,000 a year but my W2 said $66,000.

Basically because of the hours I work I get an extra 10% added to my paycheck on top of my base pay. The 10% isn't included in my basepay but does show up on my paystub. I'm simply going to put that as an explantion on my cover sheet for my fiance to take during her interview. I doubt it makes a difference as most employer don't list bonus, overtime as basepay so it may differ. Shouldn't be that big of a deal.

It won't matter. I make X amount as a salary, which is what is in my Employer Letter. In addition to that, I get a bonus, which is not included in that letter, because it varies from year to year, and that total amount is what shows up on my W2.
