We are all not one hive mind.

Think of it this way. When a white person is in a fancy car and dressed up, what's the first assumption? They're a business person. No one would say off the bat their some white collar thief. It's the assumption that most black people are criminal that is the issue.

Val is correct in saying there is something inherently criminal with black people. This is what's mostly touched on.

But Marv, the numbers do support that a very highly disproportionate number of them are. It's a stigma that comes with those numbers.

My assumption is that most blacks, like most whites, are law abiding, hard working people that care about the communities they live in.

True. I was speaking of a community consensus, not a oneness of being.

There was a consensus done on this years ago. From the results of the studies, black people wanted more police presence in their neighborhoods. The problem was the police were treating the law biding citizens just like the criminals. There was no separation between the two. I've seen it in the places where my friends used to live. The cops would stop us and grill me a few times a week. I'd get frustrated, but never lost my cool since I knew how quick things could go sour. St. Louis used to be very segregated. You knew what places you could or couldn't go. The closer you got to the airport, the more at risk you became if you were black.

So black people were faced with a choice, have police around who held the most negative opinions of the neighborhoods they were patrolling, which led to incidents of police brutality, or no police which let the criminals run rampart.

I would agree with that statement in general terms.

Exactly. Dodge City faced the same crisis. However, once the criminal element was gone, such heavy handed tactics were no longer required.

Not saying it's not accurate. I'm saying it's not right. If we're the minority in this country, how can it ever be right? You're saying(not you but the idea) is all black people have to eradicate crime and poverty in order to be considered worthy of the benefit of the doubt. It's not enough to work hard and progress when someone who shares your skin color can render your hard work useless.

Personally, I'd like to see cops in black neighborhoods reach out more and try to work with the communities. I would also like to see more people help rat out those unsavory types that destroy said neighborhoods.

It is called "Community Policing" or http://www.stlouisco.com/LawandPublicSafety/PoliceDepartment/Services/NeighborhoodPolicing

In the military, such situations usually resulted in a blanket party, I am just saying. You police your own.

It's bigger than that. If a blanket party and some push ups could remedy the situation, it would have been done a long time ago. It's a catch 22 from what I've seen. We're taught to stick together because we share the same skin color, even when it's wrong. Drug dealing is considering "hustling", even though it kills people and destroys the neighborhood. You don't snitch because we're in the struggle together. These things are inhibiting and self destructive.

You're talking to a native of St. Louis. This would be great if they went to places like Grand or the south side.

Unfortunately yes, that is the way most people think. It's guilt by association. It's not necessarily right, but it does hold true in different ways for most all aspects of life. I remember when I was younger that my Italian Grandfather and Uncles were automatically assumed to be part of the mob simply because of their last names.

This would go a long way in curing the problems that exist.

That's where my frustration lies. Stereotypes suck.
