I suppose it is a waste of money if you can go without your spouse working for a few years. That is how long it takes some to get a green card. The EAD is only insurance, and as you can see from rebbecajo's experience, it can come in handy.

K1 Visa Process long ago and far away...

02/09/06 - NOA1 date

12/17/06 - Married!

AOS Process a fading memory...

01/31/07 - Mailed AOS/EAD package for Olga and Anya

06/01/07 - Green card arrived in mail

Removing Conditions

03/02/09 - Mailed I-751 package (CSC)

03/06/09 - Check cashed

03/10/09 - Recieved Olga's NOA1

03/28/09 - Olga did biometrics

05/11/09 - Anya recieved NOA1 (took a call to USCIS to take care of it, oddly, they were helpful)

I agree that the EAD's a good insurance. I received my EAD just today, but had my AOS interview yesterday. If everything goes well, I should be getting my Green Card soon. But it seems that you never know what might happen throughout this entire process...

I took the risk of not applying for EAD or AP. If my AOS starts taking too long or if I get caught up in the FBI namechecks I'll apply for my EAD, although I'm hoping that it won't be necessary.

I guess it is a waste of money for some, if you get your greencard quickly...but for those of us stuck in FBI namechecks it was definately not a waste of money.

Hi Rncarterjm and Everyone Else!

I agree, the EAD and the Advanced Parole is a waste of money. I was advised of that beforehand, hence I never applied for it.

Lol..the funny thing is that the money that we saved in not applying for an EAD and Advanced Parole went to paying the immigration lawyer's bill instead (and yes, it was worth the money).

I got my AOS approved and got my Green Card rather quickly too!

I wonder if the new process that they are suggesting (along with the fee increase ;) ) will be better? Seems like those who get stuck in namecheck hell, will not have to keep renewing EADs etc. Fingers crossed!

For some of us, an EAD would be a blessing. Of course, the greencard is the goal...but to not have anything, NOT fun.

Congrats to those of you who have your EAD and to those of you who have your greencard!

I-485 , I-765, I-130: NOA1 : 1/23/2006

Biometrics 2/23/2006

Went back to renew EAD through Infopass: EAD card was not given "due to reasons we can't disclose"

5/3/2007: Confirmation that EAD is delayed due to background checks. (started to use the senator, ombudsman and was just a royal pain in the neck)

5/30/2007: EAD production ordered (after over 400 days of waiting!!! woo hoo!)

AOS Interview: 5/12/2008!!! FINALLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it depends where you lived and what your status is. We live in NY. My husband and I got married then applied for the documents. In NY you can't obtain a DL License without an EAD or a SS#. He just got approved for his EAD in the begining of the month and we went straight to the SS Office and received notice it would take four weeks.

I could not put him on any joint bills or accounts unless he had a valid DL or a SS#. We had our interview on Jan 30th and while it went well we werent approved and the officer said she had to review the file further...I think it had to do with the fact that we have no joint bills but credit cards in both our names (but he is not listed on the bill).

I have read somewhere that USCIS is going to get rid of EAD completely. I guess USCIS is going to try and force that you do the fiancee visa before getting any legal docs and get rid of overstayed tourist visa immigrants that fall in love and get married in the US...

I doubt that they are going to get rid of the EAD...

Anyway, think you may be confused with the proposed revision in fees. It states that if you file I-485, you won't need to pay for the EAD/AP anymore. However, this is still in the proposal stage.
