Yeah i read that too. But how was I supposed to get the learners permit with only my passport. It didn't make sense to me. My green card came after four months. But before that i went to ask to the dps and they said that i had to wait for the green card.

But now it doesn't matter. I have the test this friday

That's all you need to prove lawful status. I don't know what visa you used to enter the US. For most, though, you just need a passport to get a Texas license, and maybe your I-797 from your adjustment of status documentation.

A bigger hurdle for some will be the requirement to prove your social security number (SSN), if you entered the US on a visa that doesn't allow you to work.

Oh, and good luck!

It looks like you may have adjusted from VWP or a tourist visa. Yours is an example of why my husband drove as a visitor until the USCIS gave him something in writing to show DPS that he was allowed to stay in the US. He was a K1 fiancé and had nothing in writing but a 90 day entry. He had to wait on his EAD card to prove he had lawful entry for one year. K1s can get a SSN, but somebody adjusting fromVWP would have to wait on EAD or a greencard before applying for the SSN.

The TX rules have refined a bit and maybe now indicate the I797C receipt for filing AOS is sufficient, but I know of two turned away at the Spring mega-center on Kuykendahl trying to use that. The problem with the receipt of filing is it has no date or written text that says how long you get to stay. They need a date so your license will expire when your legal status expires. My husbands first license expired on the same day as his EAD. Once he got the greencard, he got a longer term license.

Good luck on your test. Are you taking written or driving test on Friday?
