I will say we shouldn't impose more sanctions. We don't want Russia to crash....specifically Europe won't want Russia to crash. There are international after effects if they go belly up.

Russia has gone belly up for a few years now. This is not a sudden phenomenon. The chickens have finally come home to roost in Moscow.

A weak Russia would benefit countries like the Baltic states and the Ukraine as they might have a chance to develop on their own and form stronger ties with Europe. Cheaper energy from Russia would also help fuel their development and help them enter the global market arena with a chance to compete. Hopefully they might help usher Russia into the real world instead of being held back by Putin's Soviet-era designs.

I think increasing government (or rather Putin) control over business and increasing corruption is more to blame than anything the west has done as far as the Russian economy goes.. That and the plummeting price of energy in all forms which is 25% of Russian GDP and 60% of of their exports.

Not complaining about the response from the west - there is only so much you can do short term - Hopefully Europe will work on long term solutions to dependence on Russian energy imports.

It's not only the sanctions, but alot of it has to do with Russia's dependency on oil exports and well oil has not been faring so well recently...and while it's going to have its bounces(one of them coming soon) it's gonna keep declining for the next couple of years. Russia, Iran, etc...when oil builds you up oil can just as easily bring you down.

Oil going lower will not help the economy. Oil going lower is all part of the larger deflationary trend taking hold. Gold's down, Silver is down, copper is down, soy, corn, oil, etc etc. Dollar up, Euro down. Traditionally stocks are almost always the last holdout and last to join a broadbased decline(cause too many people tend to believe till it's too late - just like on this forum - that everything is just peachy). All the signs are there and have been since 2011 when most assets resumed their 2008-9 declines(and the dollar its ascent). All that's left to do is sit and watch as stocks join them, soon.

I rather enjoy seeing the right wing nut jobs wrong on yet another issue. They said the sanctions wouldn't have any impact on Russia and that Putin laughs them off. He ain't laughing anymore.

Taking a look at the charts I posted above, it's clear the decline started in 2011. There were no sanctions then. This whole trend has very little to do with the sanctions.
