Yes, interesting this part, too.

I'm not here suggesting that people should be left in free fall. There ought to be a safety net that nobody is allowed to fall through. That safety net ought to provide shelter, food and clothing for the impacted. If SSDI is that safety net, fine. But then we need to talk about consolidating programs into this one and put it on solid funding. Just because you can't find a job that fits where you live does not justfy, in my opinion, to go on SSDI. I've had that happen to me more than once over the last decade and a half. Surprisingly, I am not on SSDI. I moved to where there was a job that fit. Believe that's the proper course of action.

of course that's the proper course of action, but people who are already poor can't relocate for jobs. poor people also can't afford lawyers for appeals and such. i think that's the important piece we're missing.

slightly unrelated but i don't feel that disabled people should be damned to a lifetime of poverty on a disability check either.

I'm not sure but whatever the requirements were she didn't meet them. Including letters from the doctors, exams, and letters from the doctor telling them she can't drive.

Here is a little information on it. http://www.ssa.gov/dibplan/dqualify5.htm#a0=2

How awful sorry to hear that Janelle

Now Val, you are letting your humanity show.

To make things sweeter her husband is legally blind.

The problem is that it is likely to increase fraudulent disability claims. Disability is the latest "go to" move to get paid for not working.

So this has nothing to do with population increase? And do you know for sure these are false claims?

Are you suggesting tht the population increased more than 100% in 10 years? Or maybe you're suggesting that twice as many people are becoming disabled, in a 10 year time frame. I think deep down you know neither of those are true, and the reality is that people are gaming the system with help from lawyers.

More people born with disabilities? I think the correlation you're looking for is an increase in law firms making a living off of getting people SSDI payments. Must be a promising business since seemingly every other commercial on TV and radio encourages people to call the lawyer to get their SSDI benefits approved.

We have a winner.

Watching TV every now and then. Can't help but notice those commercials. Disability claims seem to be the new ambulance chasing.

While living in Canada, I never saw either of those. Seems they don't let trial lawyers dictate legislation up there.

Lawyers in Canada are not permitted to advertise like American lawyers are. I'm not certain why.

That's right. First, we have drug companies advertise their new drugs and sometimes even the newly invented diseases that those new drugs combat - think: restless leg syndrome. Drug companies make billions off that stuff. Then when people start to drop like flies from consuming those drugs for which billions have been spent, we have lawyers advertise for the lawsuits and the eventual payouts that await those that were injured or killed by those drugs. Everyone gets rich. Some get dead, of course but a bit of collateral damage is to be expected. Isn't America great?

hell yeah.

Elect me president, and I'll show you. I don't do anything for free. I know how you DONT fix it. You make people responsible for their own actions. You don't give people money for doing nothing. That GUARANTEES that you'll have a high level of poverty. The poverty rate is pretty much the same as it was 40 years ago. So whatever they're doing, aint working.

Elect you for President? We heard this speech already from the previous c- economic graduates who ended up as president. we should require clear cut plans of action before electing anyone else. I need power point presentations and models.

Seems you're advocating electing a president that has actual managerial experience, rather than someone who can give a good speech. Interesting. I find myself agreeing with you more and more lately.
