12-Year-Old Girl Shoots and Kills Mountain Lion Stalking Her

ODESSA - It’s not your average hunting story, a twelve-year-old Odessa girl shoots and kills a mountain lion just feet away from her. Her family took a well anticipated hunting trip to New Mexico in hopes of bringing home a large elk. However their trip became much more exciting when the young girl realized she was being stalked by the mountain lion.

Alyssa Caldwell first began hunting when she turned nine, and ever since then she has looked forward to going on a big hunt like this. When Alyssa turned 12, the age requirement for this particular hunt, and was actually picked to go, she was extremely excited.

“This was my first year to put in of course, and I got in the first year,” said Alyssa.

For the past three years 12-year-old Alyssa Caldwell has hunted relatively small game such as white tail deer, but before her trip to hunt her biggest one yet Alyssa graduated to this… a .30-06 hunter’s rifle, but little did she know that this gun may be her life saver.

“It’s a pretty good sized gun, I really like this gun,” said Alyssa.

Just two days into her New Mexico Hunt Alyssa and her dad were looking for the prize elk near a meadow. Asking her to stay where she was, her dad turned back to grab some gear, and that’s when Alyssa felt something was wrong.

“I already had a feeling that something was watching me or something, but I didn’t see the cat until it was close,” said Alyssa.

Without giving it a second thought, Alyssa knew exactly what she needed to do. “I just raised up my gun and shot it point blank long ways through the body because it was facing me when I shot.”

It only took one shot and the mountain lion was on the ground. “The cat instantly flopped over right there, of course I kept my gun on it just in case it got up or something like that.”

Immediately her dad ran back to where he left Alyssa, expecting an elk. “He said ‘where did they go,’ and I said I had shot a cat, and he came and saw the cat that close and fell to his knees and got emotional,” she said. “I definitely could have died, it was probably like seconds away from the cat pouncing on me.”

Game wardens did do a full investigation – and found out that her kill was done in self-defense, however she wasn’t able to keep the mountain lion. But, her trip definitely wasn’t a waste, just two days after the mountain lion incident Alyssa shot her first Bull Elk, enough meat for an entire year.

A gun was used by a twelve year old girl on a hunting trip to defend herself from an animal who absolutely could not be reasoned with.

Fun fact: I come from a hunting family and am proud of that. I am grateful for the delicious food it brought us over the years to supplement what we bought. I still am a strong proponent of gun control.
