DOS or NVC?

Hi, I was wondering what is the difference between calling NVC, and calling DOS. I really, really hate calling the NVC. I will rather get a root canal than calling NVC. So, if I am having problems with forms and documents missing out do my file, can I call DOS instead of NVC? I really hope that someone can answer that for me.... Thank you :-)

The NVC is the office that assigns the case number. The consulate in Santo Domingo will not be aware of your case until NVC has completed processing.

I don't think DOS has anything to do with the embassy in the Sanyo Domingo...

I know that.. My cases gave been at NVC since March. My question is what is the difference between NVC and DOS?

Sorry, I thought you may have been referring to the DCF (direct consular filing) option where you send your visa application directly to the consulate.

If you are referring to the Department of State (DOS), there is no difference. The National Visa Center is the division of the Department of State that handles visa processing. If you call the DOS immigration services they will refer you to the NVC for all questions regarding your case.

If you feel your case is way behind the time line (which it appears to be) then your steps are to call the NVC and ask for a supervisor review. If that doesn't get you anywhere then an email or letter to you Senator or Congressman would be next. They can make an inquiry with the NVC on your behalf if your case has fallen outside of normal processing times. I cannot suggest more than this without know all the details of your case.

Thank you so much for clarifying that for me. I constantly call NVC because they keep misplacing my documents. I have sent the affidavit of support three times already! Everytime I have sent them, I have done it via certified mail, which means that I know for a fact that they have received, and signed for them. My congressman is an 4$$ (please pardon my French) because I have written four emails to him explaining my situation, and so far, no answer back. As of Tuesday, my cases are under review for a supervisor to take a look. Hopefully, this will help me because I don't have extra money to pay a lawyer :-(

DOS doesn't help you with anything. They don't even want to talk to you if you're an immigrant visa case.

I have to agree with the others...don't bother calling DOS! They hardly handle immigrant visa cases and just send you to NVC.

I called NVC yesterday and found that if you call after 8:00 that 45 minute hold time (IF you get through) goes way down. I got through on my first redial and only waited 6 minutes! Earlier I hit redial 77 times, got through, then accidentally hung up on myself after 28 minutes. :bonk:

Good luck!

One thing that I don't seem to understand is why fiance visas are so easy to get.... Is it because the government makes more money that way? Is it all about money? I am really, really depressed because in this process, I feel like our hands are tied and our voice are silenced. THEY CONTROLLED OUR LIVES AS THEY PLEASE.....

Just to clarify the statement that is in bold and red, the purpose of the NVC is to assign case numbers to files, and act as a document intake center for some cases. Actual visa processing is only done at Embassies and Consulates.

I do believe (and someone will correct me if I am wrong) that the K1 is not considered an immigration visa like the CR1/IR1, where the AOS and IV is all done before the visa interview and issuance of the visa. K1 recipients have to do all that after arrival in the US and after their marriage. When we, as CR1 or IR1 recipients, arrive in the US, that is it until the CR1 Removal of conditions in two years. I hope this helps...I know it feels unfair but in the long run I believe the spousal visa is better (for me anyway).

Hang in there, I feel your pain. The closer to the end we get, the more it hurts, but the wait is nearly over and anything worth having is worth waiting for (gosh I sound like my mother!) :)

So. It is all about money because people still have to pay fees to get the fiance visa.. Once they are in the states, then they have to pay for everything else, right? NVC is processing those ones first because us double the money for them... What a whole bunch of 4$$holes (again, please ladron my language. It is all coming out of my frustration) really, whole bunch of 4$$holes...

NVC does not make money from K1 cases. The USCIS makes the money from those cases which is why their i-129F processing is normally faster. But they pay more, have to do more work for a green card, and in the end are normally longer to greencard while shorter to visa.

That's a good way to explain it. :) Wish I could put these things across as well as you do, NLR. Thanks!
