Yes I believe spanking not beating at a certain age is good for bad beahviour. I was spanked as a child. Spanked once for something I did wrong and never again.

I only remember being spanked 2-3 times - and I sure listened! I think its OK to spank on VERY rare occasions and in desperate situations; otherwise, alternate methods are best. I remember two times getting a bar of soap in my mouth for swearing - haven't sworn since then - honest!

I've spanked both my kids I think twice in their life and it was before the age of 6. It was an absolute last resort after time outs and taking away priveleges did not work. Each time I did it I cried. I'm soooo not a good disciplinarian.

As a middle school teacher I believe that spanking should be done .... and no, I'm NOT talking about abuse here.

Kids today are becoming increasingly disrespectful and defiant towards adults. I think that if they learned their lesson as a child they would grow up to be scared of consquences.

I was spanked (not too many times) by my parents when I was young and they ALWAYS sat me down first and explained to me why I was being punished (as if I didn't know) and then that was it. The talk was worse than the pain.

I was spanked occasionally (my mom sounds a bit like Doodlebug) and by my dad. I remember thinking "well isn't this undignified and weird." I've never been a parent so I can't say what I would do. In theory I would say no, that teaching children there is a relationship between physical pain and disobedience or conflict is wrong, but I chose "ages 2-6" because apparently some parents feel they have to do it and I'm not one to say anything about parenting. I would probably draw the line after that age though regardless of what I learn as a parent if I ever am one.

Same here...they didn't just started hitting at us like some people must imagine when they think of spanking. And afterwards they always said something uplifting and gave us a hug.

I wish more parents spanked their kids these days. I am so so tired of seeing brats in public, being so disrespectful to their parents. And when I worked with kids, the kids who said they got spanked sometimes were the best behaved kids and the kids whose parents were afraid to say "No!" to them were terrors.
